Frank Ocean is an artist’s artist and encourages patience with his work, but when he finally drops new material, it’s advisable to pay attention. The LA-based, Odd Future-affiliated crooner just announced his first official album, “Channel Orange,” will be released on July 17 via Def Jam.

He previewed the new material with “Pyramids” – a 10-minute epic that touches on everything from club music to good old-fashioned slow jam R&B. “Pyramids,” an ambitious song with multiple movements, has already taken the Internet by storm, and Ocean plans to capitalize with a July tour through many big U.S. markets.

Other than its release date, no other information about collaborators or songs on “Channel Orange” is available as of press time.

    Check the tour dates:

July 13 – Seattle, WA – Showbox at the Market
July 14 – Vancouver, BC – Commodore Ballroom
July 17 – Los Angeles, CA – The Wiltern
July 19 – Austin, TX – La Zona Rosa
July 20 – Dallas, TX – Southside Music Hall
July 22 – Atlanta, GA – Center Stage Theatre
    July 23 – Washington, DC – 9:30 Club
July 25 – Philadelphia, PA – Union Transfer
    July 26 – New York, NY – Terminal 5
July 28 – Boston, MA – Paradise Rock Club
July 29 – Montreal, Quebec – Club Soda
July 31 – Toronto, Ontario – The Guvernment
    August 1 – Detroit, MI – TBA
    August 4 – Chicago, IL – Lollapalooza

His first single is 10 minutes??

That’ll be an interesting radio edit. I will be checking for this dude. He seems like the type of artist that the GRAMMYs would go for. Also, he’s the most tolerable member of Odd Future….

“Channel Orange” is #1 on iTunes and wasn’t even supposed to be released this week.

It’s interesting because the album is listed under POP but it’s definitley a shoo-in for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the GRAMMYs and possibly more.

Personally, this is one of my favorite albums of the year. It’s beautifully written, sang, and produced. Everyone should go out and support this man. I doubt he’ll have blockbuster first week sales based on recent buzz and press but it doesn’t matter. An album like this sells based on word of mouth. He’ll definitely get that if people don’t lose interest too quickly.

P.S. The album is sold physically next week.

STANDOUT TRACKS: “Bad Religion”, “Forrest Gump”

Only heard half the album so far, but it’s very good.  This should be a potential Album of the Year nominee.  All the build up, I think alot of peers will be voting big time for him come Grammy time.  I still only think he will sell about 50-125k first or second week.

His coming out has made his buzz explode. I think he could be a danger to Usher and Chris this Grammy season, particularly for Best Urban Contemporary Album.

    @Criss

Beyonce’s 4, Mariah’s E=MC 2 and several R&B albums are listed under “Pop.” iTunes does those categorizations. channel ORANGE will definitely go Best Urban Contemporary Album.

Could Frank Ocean go Best R&B Album?  I get that kind of vibe from him.

channel ORANGE fits the description of Best Urban Contemporary Album than Best R&B Album. It’ll go to the former.

Frank Ocean deserves  to win in either category he submits. At first, I was rooting for Usher to win but Frank clearly has the better album. Usher better win “R&B Performance” and “R&B Song” for “Climax” tho. In a perfect world Frank would go R&B and Usher will go Urban since Frank is a bit more traditional.

I love it. And “Pyramid” is a masterpiece, IMHO. I hope Frank Ocean gets his due when the Grammy nominees are announced.

I’ve been rooting for Frank Ocean for awhile now. I’m so pleased that he pulled through with this album and that he actually stands a chance at receiving major nominations.

I think he would easily beat out Usher and Chris Brown for Urban Cont. Album. Usher’s sales are extremely underwhelming and Chris Brown’s new album has been universally panned.

Honey, let’s wait and see how Frank Ocean’s album sells before predicting it to win Best Urban Contemporary Album.  I’ll be surprised if he opens up with 100K or more.  His “coming out” buzz will quickly fade (it may have already faded).  Based on the tracks I’ve heard, the album seems a bit more traditional.  Wouldn’t be surprised if his label submitted him to Best R&B Album.

He is a strong contender for Best New Artist.

It may have already faded? Is that why Frank Ocean released his album EARLY to iTunes because of the buzz and is sitting at #1?

Channel ORANGE will outsell Usher’s and Chris’ flopped albums in the long run. And you can just stop that “I wouldn’t be surprised if his label submitted to Best R&B Album.” It’s not happening. His album will be on the same list with Usher’s. There’s nothing ‘traditional’ about the album.

“The week’s big story is controversial Def Jam/IDJ avant-R&B crooner Frank Ocean, a member of the L.A.-based hip-hop collective Odd Future, who will open with a very impressive 110-125k as an iTunes exclusive for his major label bow, Channel, Orange. Ocean surprised everyone by Tweeting the album would be made available after his network TV debut Monday night onLate Night with Jimmy Fallon singing “Bad Religion” from the release. With an appearance on Jay Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne album—that’s him introducing the disc’s “No Church in the Wild”—as well as a best-selling mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra, Ocean is burning up the blogosphere.

He has also been making news by blogging on Tumblrthat his first infatuation as a 19-year-old was with a man and using the gender “he” on several of the new disc’s love songs.

Ocean’s tour begins in Seattle this Friday (7/13) and hits L.A.’s Wiltern next Tuesday (7/17) in what is sure to be the show of the year.”

Looks like he will come close to Usher and Chris with just iTunes sales.

Just imagine if he had physical sales in his numbers it would probably be 300k+.

Im really shocked at how well the black community is accepting him. He was brave for coming out but its unfortunate that he had to do this to garner buzz for his album. I’ve been listening to Frank Ocean for years now before he came out and I thought he’ll do well regardless. Now everyone is hoping on his dick which is a pet peeve of mind which hopefully i’ll get over.

@gucci, I know you want Usher to win lol but he’ll probably have to come out too
