Here are the top-selling albums of eligibility period (October 1, 2014 – September 30, 2015) for the next Grammys.

Sales = Copies sold in US since its release
MC = Metacritic score (scores listed in bold received Universal Acclaim, or a score of 81 or higher)
Release = US release date (all dates from October to December are from 2014, and all from January to September are from 2015)
Hot 100 hits = Songs from the album that have charted on the Billboard Hot 100. Note: not all songs are eligible for Grammys, i.e. Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” or Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass.” Songs in bold were Top 10 hits, while songs listed in smaller typeface charted below #40.

Thanks Daniel!  I love seeing this list each year.

    a) Sam Hunt is way lower than I figured he’d be.  His album has been in the top ten for so long, I figured it’d be up in the #3 – #5 slots for the year.

    b) Crazy how low Mumford and Sons’ sales are given the reception to their last album (and a Grammy AOTY win).

    c) Still sticking with my current AOTY predictions – Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Alabama Shakes, Sam Hunt, The Weeknd.

Sam Hunt sold an extra 27k this week, so he must be in thr Top 10 now (ahead of Hozier)…

Unfortunately, the source I used for sales is 1 week behind schedule.

I would be inclined to think that Sam Hunt is a viable contender, however, as irrelevent as Metacritic scores may actually be sometimes when determining AOTY nominees, an album getting nominated with no Metacritic score at all is pretty rare. I was willing to overlook this for the Frozen soundtrack last year, given it was the #1 selling album, but alas, it wasn’t nominated. In the last 10 years, only 1 album was able to get nominated without a Metacritic score: Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters. To this day, I am still baffled by its nomination. I haven’t done the research, but I don’t know how far back you’d have to look to find another album that didn’t even crack the top 100 on the albums chart before its nomination.

I tried looking for reviews for Montevallo a couple of months ago when I was putting my predictions together and I couldn’t find many from major publications… That must be why Metacritic didn’t include it on their database. All i could find on their site was that last year Montevallo ended up on some year-end Top Ten lists (Washington
Post, Associated Press, Noisey,…) featured on their “Best of
2014: Music Critic Top Ten Lists” page.

    I have updated the list!

Be sure to check out the separate list I posted underneath that rank the most acclaimed albums in the Top 100, as well as a list of the albums that have Top 10 hits.

Thanks for updating the list! Great job.

Just one small error I caught, Sam Hunt’s “House Party” peaked at #26 last week, not #39

Besides that, and maybe going a bit off-topic here, I know there’s no easier way to compare reviews than Metacritic, but I personally feel they can be so misguiding with their scores. Don’t get me wrong, I think the list posted here is great for reference but can we really say, after actually reading the reviews, that something like Fifth Harmony’s “Reflection”, with only 6 reviews, is more critically acclaimed than albums like “Rock or Bust” or “1989”?? Or even worse, can we realistically say that it has anywhere near the same acclaim as an album like “Pageant Material”, which got mostly raves or very positive reviews only to see it’s final grade fall below 80 in the last minute after receiving just a couple o very dissonant reviews from their total of 23 counted? (without saying they left out a bunch of great-to-rave reviews from stateside and British publications like The Times, The Evening Standard, Newsday, USA Today, …)

I know in the end of the day, Metacritic grades don’t mean a lot in the Grammy race, but I always see how much importance people give them and I felt that I should point that out. (sorry for going off-topic lol)

It might not play as much of a factor as sales, buzz or hit singles, but critical acclaim certainly plays a factor. Quite often, it can be that extra boost an album needs to stand above other albums in roughly the same sales range.

Why do you think Beck’s Morning Phase was nominated for Album of the Year over, let’s say, Celine Dion’s Loved Me Back to Life? Both had sold about 280k before nominations were announced, neither had any Hot 100 hits, and Dion has a better Grammy history. Yes, Beck was an overdue vet, but the strong reviews certainly helped.

Jack White’s Blunderbuss, Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange, Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs, Radiohead’s In Rainbows, Vince Gill’s These Days, Paul McCartney’s Chaos and Creation in the Backyard, the White Stripes’ Elephant would never have been nominated if they didn’t have strong reviews.

And there are some albums that, while they had strong sales, arguably wouldn’t have scored AOTY nominees if they weren’t so acclaimed: Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, MAAD City, Ne-Yo’s Year of the Gentleman, Foo Fighters’ Wasting Light, Gnarls Barkley’s St. Elsewhere, Green Day’s American Idiot (remember, this LP was only a few months old at the time), U2’s How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, Missy Elliott’s Under Construction, Norah Jones’ Come Away with Me, Bruce Springsteen’s The Rising, Kanye West’s The College Dropout or Late Registration, etc.

If reviews didn’t play a factor at all, we would have a lot more AOTY nominees like Michael Buble, Jason Aldean, Susan Boyle, Josh Groban, Justin Bieber, Nickelback, Daughtry and the soundtracks to Frozen, Hannah Montana and High School Musical.

If an album has bad/mediocre reviews or not many reviews, it certainly is a much larger obstacle to overcome that can usually only be compensated by success of singles released from the album (Katy Perry, fun, the Black Eyed Peas).

The average Metacritic score for AOTY nominees in the last 5 years is 73.48.

how did you get “critical acclaim doesn’t matter at all at the Grammys” on my post?! LOL

I didn’t say that at all! All my points were related to Metacritic, how they compile their final scores and how they can be misguiding and not represente exactly what is more acclaimed, especially when you compare scores.
You read far into what I wrote and got something completely extreme to what I said LOL
