Billboard recently posted an online article praising Jason Derulo for his consistent success on the pop charts: LINK

His newest single, “Want to Want Me” is his 6th top 10 in 6 years and is the most added Top 40 song in history. Not to mention, he’s nabbed a collaboration with Stevie Wonder on his new album Everything Is 4.

In your opinion, why do you think Jason Derulo has been able to notch so many hit singles in comparison to his former contemporaries (Jay Sean, Taio Cruz, Iyaz) and maintained a lane for himself in the industry. Discuss.

He the kind of artist I never own his music but whenever I hear him I know the words. He’s very consistent but never really relevant.

    Jason Derulo sucks.

I will be more impressed if he were able to sell some albums.  His shelf life is about to expire.

He is sexy though.  I’ll play with it!

    Beats the shit outta me.

A couple of his songs are decent, but on a whole, I don’t know why he’s stuck around.

We all know Jason Derulo’s strength lies within his singles but he’s also a very good performer. He can really dance. I think that’s what set him apart from the other male artists of his era as well.

I think he’s lasted because he can assimilate into whatever trend is current on Pop radio. I do wish he’d take more risks as an artist. He has potential to be even greater than what he is now. He writes his own songs, can set a stage on fire, and has Pop radio/digital support. All he needs is that 1 solidifying album (i.e. Confessions, Future Sex/Love Sounds).

@gucci You are a mess! LOL He is fine.

He’s only as big as his next single. His label has aligned him producers that have given him guaranteed hits. He doesn’t have a style or differentiating factor that distinguishes him from other pop artists. Any of his songs could have been sent to JT, Usher or Ne-Yo,(they could’ve sung them better). The good news is one bad single wont ruin his career, but his star power is basically nonexistent to say he’s had longevity.

I HATE Jason DeRulo, but I can’t deny that I do love some of his songs. The Billboard article states that he seems to go back and forth between a “dirty” and “clean” image. I personally don’t have a favorite side to him as “Talk Dirty” was my ratchet anthem when it was popular, but I currently am really liking “Want to Want Me.” I think it helps that he switches it up and that’s what keeps him relevant. I don’t understand how it’s happened either, but I suspect that has something to do with it. I either really like his songs like the ones mentioned above, or I despise them like no other (let’s not even talk about “Wiggle”). He’s a singles artist for sure, so the only exciting thing about his upcoming album is seeing what future singles he has up his sleeve. And that album title — “Everything is 4”?? What?? So yeah, I don’t have an exact answer but I guess Billboard’s article makes sense in some manner. I’ll probably continue to have a complicated relationship with Jason DeRulo until his time is up.

He’s kind of like a male Katy Perry in that regard.

Jordin Sparks has been riding on Jason DeRulo and Sage the Gemini’s coattails for a while now. She hasn’t had a hit since 2009 and is one cheeseburger away from being Kelly Price. How you dewin?

The headline to this thread is a question that runs through my head everyday. How can someone that awful of a singer sell so many songs and be narcissistic enough to sing his name in like every song. It’s so annoying. His songs are only popular for the the instrumentals

He is basically a younger Usher. Generic, mostly bad music, covered up by appearance and body and an ability to dance. In other words, a female Britney Spears.

But Britney is still relevant 15 years later.

He keeps creating catchy pop songs. Plain and simple.

You’re as good as your last single, and he just keeps pumping them out. Good on him. He’s in the same category as Pitbull and Flo Rida.
