Sure, the ratings are strong but the awards themselves get short shrift despite a three and half hour running time.

Oscar wins boost box office and salaries, Emmys can keep a show on the air but it is rare to even see an album or act tout their Grammy wins

Are there too many categories? Is music’s top honor more akin to the Teen Choice Awards?

The first order of business is to split the Vocal categories back by gender. One of the worst moves ever to have it as a Solo category.

People complain about the restructuring of the categories, but I have yet to see any negative effect from it. The ratings are still booming annually and we are starting to see less sweeps from people like Beyoncé and more wins from under-the-radar/C list acts, something we wouldn’t have seen under the old format. Plus, something like Best Pop Solo Performance is now one of the most competitive races and televised categories at the Grammys. I don’t see this changing again until music becomes competitive on all sides of the field. The best thing the Grammys have done is the restructuring. I’m happy with the combination of categories. Good riddance irrelevant categories. Evil Grin

^^^ I could be wrong, but the reason why so many people still watch the show because one way or another, it will always mostly be a music show. What so many people watch the show for in the first place is what takes up most of the show’s time on the air which will always be the performances from those who get to sing on the show and never the award presentations.

The first order of business is to split the Vocal categories back by gender. One of the worst moves ever to have it as a Solo category.

I agree. I would also resurrect the Best Country Collaboration Grammy award as well because to me, placing collaborations in there for the Best Country Duo/Group Performance award doesn’t makes sense when they are techincally not duo and group performances since those who collaborate together are not normally duos and groups in the first place. Putting three forms of performances against each other will also mean that way too many good performances will be overlooked when the dust has settled.

    God bless you two always!!!

I would slash most the the awards with 3 categories per field (Best xxxxx Song, Performance and Album). Get rid of all the clutter and make the Grammys really, really hard to get nominated and even harder to win. Or make 6 nominees per category.

This might not affect the ratings, but I think there should be just a little less performances and more awards be given out during the show. 18-20 performances and 12-14 awards handed out.

Fix the awards or fix the telecast? That’s two totally separate issues. I’d fix the show by capping the telecast at three hours, limiting the endless amount of musical performances, refocus on actual awards-giving, and reinvigorate the host and presenters by getting some nonconventional choices in there to see how they do on the big stage. Maybe even switch venues/networks/producers in different years. It’s quite a stale telecast as it stands, and those nominating “concerts” have been a waste of time too. For the awards themselves, I’d eliminate the blue-ribbon panel and leave the General Field to a popular vote, reinstate the gender-spilt categories that shouldn’t have been removed in the first place, and increase the number of nominees to six instead of five (at least in General FIeld, but other genres as well if competiive enough).

The Blue Ribbon Panel the reason why horrible songs don’t end up getting nominated. (Horrible = Psy and Biber) It also stop people from buying nominations.

Wrong. Bad nominees can be chosen by any method. The BRP has outlived its usefulness.

I would only allow songs that were released as singles to only be submitted on the ballot.  This would help prevent album tracks from popular artists from getting nominated.

I would present more awards.  I would love to see Best Video, Producer of the Year, Blues Category, Comedy Category and the Dance categories presented.

Final2 pretty much said it, but I cannot like, so I agree that they need to slash the categories.  Where is the prestige in being a Grammy nominee when pretty much everyone in popular music is one?

Although wait, are we talking about the show itself?

I’ll assume this is about the telecast and not the awards process — the number of categories has been sufficiently slashed, and by all accounts the review committees have had a positive impact. More fields are adopting them each year (now including Rock for the first time).

As far as the telecast is concerned: can you imagine if the Oscars didn’t show clips from any of the winning/nominated movies, but instead said things like, “Stay tuned for another upcoming Oscar Moment: Daniel Day-Lewis, Jennifer Lawrence, and JK Simmons perform a scene from Hamlet…LIVE!” That’s basically what the Grammys seem to do these days. Awards for recorded music seem pushed aside for live performances, hoping that they’ll be tweeted about like the VMAs.

It’s hard to argue with the increased ratings that have come with treating the Grammys like a concert, but these days it would be easier than ever to insert a few video montages highlighting some of the winners, especially those given out before the telecast. You can still have lots of interesting/exciting performances without treating the awards like an afterthought.

I can understand this, but sadly there have been way too many times that really good songs are the ones that never make it to radio.
