Hozier was snubbed, and given her nominations shortfall, I’m not so confident about Meghan Trainor. I’m thinking maybe Sam Hunt, but James Bay could be right up there too.December 7, 2015 at 7:12 am #414750
Sam Hunt will win, but James Bay should and could win.December 7, 2015 at 7:38 am #414751
If Courtney Barnett can win, I will take back every bad thing I have ever said about the Grammys.December 7, 2015 at 7:40 am #414752
I don’t know… I think James Bay definitely has a big support seeing he is the BNA nominee with most nods, but in such a wide open category I think Sam Hunt could “stand out” when you consider Tori/Meghan and James/Courtney are more “alike” (a similar cenario to when Zac Brown Band won a couple of years ago).
Right now I’m guessing James Bay, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Sam takes it eitherDecember 7, 2015 at 7:42 am #414753
Hozier was NEVER the frontrunner to win Best New Artist. Sam Hunt seems poised to win. Watch out for James Bay and Tori Kelly.December 7, 2015 at 7:42 am #414754
I think Sam will get itDecember 7, 2015 at 7:44 am #414755
So Chris Stapleton totally could have won this, right? He should have submitted here. Missed opportunity. Poor Hozier. No Fetty Wap? Good. James Bay made a much stronger showing than I thought he would. Maybe he can take this. I’m sticking with Meghan Trainor for now.December 7, 2015 at 7:47 am #414756
I think this is between Sam Hunt, Tori Kelly and James Bay.
Sam Hunt has the country backing and the Grammys have often given BNA to country artists.
I was close to predicting Tori Kelly getting a BNA nomination, however, I was skeptical considering the lack of commercial success she has had. She does fit the bill of past BNA artists, she a woman with a big voice. I also think her performing at different awards show this year (Billboard, BET Awards, VMAS) also helped.
James Bay, I was surprised by the all the love he got in some of the rock categories and he is the most nominated BNA, so I can see an upset.December 7, 2015 at 7:48 am #414757
Either Sam Hunt or James Bay, I guess.December 7, 2015 at 7:48 am #414758
Chris Stapleton wasn’t eligible for BNA because he was previously nominated for his work with The Steeldrivers. There was no missed opportunity.December 7, 2015 at 7:59 am #414759
I never got why Hozier was the frontrunner. He had one hit. ONE. And then, we never heard from him again. His album was not even good.
If Chris Stapleton’s ineligibility is true, then I demand the points I bet on him for BNA to be added to my score.
I believe this award is Sam Hunt’s to lose. He has that mass appeal. He is really inventive with his music (Montevallo should’ve been AotY nominee, instead of The Weeknd). James Bay is still not that well-known, and Tori Kelly is not close to showing half her potential yet. She will return to the GRAMMYs, and win some of them in the future, as she’s very talented, but I don’t think she’ll win this year. I expected Meghan Trainor to appear in the pop categories (I even thought she’d be a double nominee in the Duo/Group for her duets with Legend and Puth), but her shortcoming is not that great a sign. Courtney Barnett has the ‘least-known’ factor on her, but she is very talented. She could win if people actually search her music, but I doubt it (since this is the sole category without the body of work accompanying the nomination).
All in all, this is a great category with five talented young artists. Good job, NARAS!December 7, 2015 at 8:07 am #414761
Tori Kelly or Meghan Tranior the former should win she’s had the best year for a new artist.December 7, 2015 at 8:14 am #414762
I guess all the money Scooter threw at Tori Kelly, getting her a performance slot in every award show possible, kind of paid off in the end… she couldn’t get a hit song or album and still is a no-name to maintream media, but at least got a BNA nom. Didn’t see that coming.
