Let’s congratulate Troy upon his debut as a feature writer at Gold Derby. Well done, Troy! Not only is your article well written, I’m sure it will cause quite an UPROAR around here! Haaa!
Go ‘head and rip Troy apart, Beyonce fans — after you read this:September 7, 2014 at 5:46 pm #401720
Before ripping me apart too bad, keep in mind I am not saying she won’t win, just that she is not a lock for the win.September 7, 2014 at 5:49 pm #401721
I don’t think she is a lock at all…. In fact i’m gonna be brave here and say that Sia’s 1,000 forms of fear will pull off a surprise and win.September 7, 2014 at 5:54 pm #401722
I don’t think she’s a lock I think it’s down to 4 albums. Beyonce, Lazzareto, Ghost Stories and In the Lonley hour any of those 4 can win righ now I have Beyonce at 1 though.September 7, 2014 at 6:11 pm #401723
Get Real! Sia’s 1,000 Forms Of Fear won’t even get nominated for AOTY, yet alone win. What are some of you posters smoking?September 7, 2014 at 6:17 pm #401724

Why is this hard to believe? No one really predicted a nomination for Sara Bareilles, and I’d say Sia has more going for her this year: a top 10 hit, a #1 album with positive reviews and songwriting clout. It wouldn’t totally shocked me if Sia showed up in AOTY, ROTY, SOTY, Pop Solo, Pop Album and Music Video. The Grammys love to give breakthrough nominations.September 7, 2014 at 6:24 pm #401725
Actually, I can see both Ed Sheeran and Sia making it into AOTY over Sam Smith, but Sam Smith still pulling off the Pop Vocal Album win.September 7, 2014 at 6:34 pm #401726
If Sara could get into AOTY, Sia (and Lana) can… but is Sia really going to go from 1 nomination for a feature on a Flo Rida song to winning AOTY for an album with 1 hit that peaked at #8?
Beyonce is winning AOTY. The only people who can stop her are Jack White, Beck or the various artists from Frozen… and although that could happen, I don’t think it will. When was the last time someone who has been in the business for 15+ years released the best album of their career and single handedly became the most popular artist around the world?
I still don’t understand how Beyonce is not a “safe” choice. If voters have already awarded her 17 times and were willing to nominate “Halo” for a live version THE YEAR AFTER IT ALREADY WON… don’t you think she will fare well with the most critically acclaimed album of her career? And can we stop talking about Beyonce being “urban” as if she has the same appeal as Kendrick Lamar and Erykah Badu… She is basically a pop star.
Looking at the history of the category reaffirms my belief that Beyonce is nearly unbeatable-
Coldplay has only gotten nominated in AOTY once and they are not winning AOTY for the worst album of their career.
Soundtracks rarely ever win and I’m doubtful that voters are going to award a children’s soundtrack when they can recognize the success and impact of Frozen by awarding “Let It Go” in several other categories.
When has a new artist ever won AOTY for an album with mediocre reviews and 1 hit? Sam Smith will need 2 or 3 more hits before he is even considered a contender to win.
Lastly, in this decade, voters have strayed away from veterans and awarded the album that they thought defined the year in music… Beck and Jack White obviously have their appeal and both of their albums make my top 10 for 2014, but they are not as relevant in the music industry today and they can’t even compare to Beyonce’s prominence in pop culture. Neither of their albums even produced a major rock/alt hit…when’s the last time a rock album won without 1 hit?

I could see Sia getting in AOTY, but I do think unless some major snubs happen in the AOTY line-up, there’s no way she wins. “Chandelier” alone isn’t enough ot make someone a winner for the big prize, although I can see her getting something like SOTY or Pop Performance.
As for Beyonce, I can see the argument for why she’d win. However, after recent Kanye and Justin snubs, you can never really be too careful about predicting noms. That said, Beyonce didn’t really have signs of backlash or the reputation of lackluster follow-ups (like Kanye and Justin had, to some extent) and I do think that, once nominated, she is a huge threat to win the whole thing.September 7, 2014 at 7:25 pm #401728
Sia could very well get in. She has an amazing album, she’s well respected by peers, she is the reason why some of them have hit songs because she has written so many hits.September 8, 2014 at 2:49 am #401730
Very good points but Beyoncé is at the prime of her career. She’s a powerhouse performer with an album with such a cultural impact around the world that is insane. Not a good barometer but have you seen the amount of people (a lot of them celebs) that post pictures with quotes like “I woke up like dis” or “flawless” or “surfboard” or whatever? Tons. Her new album is like the musical version of Mean Girls: it’s popular, it’s catchy and it feels important. Female voters will swoon over this album.September 8, 2014 at 3:15 am #401731
I mean, I hate to drag myself, but cultural impact around the world? most popular artist in the world? nope, 3/4 of the album sales came from the US. to be honest, I have a feeling in the lonely hour will winSeptember 8, 2014 at 3:23 am #401732
Cultural impact =/= Sales. I did not mention the word “sales” once in my post because I believe the quality of an album goes way beyond that. As I said before I’m not a Beyoncé stan. I didn’t even pay attention to her before this latest album. And I would love to see Jack White to win. But right now I believe Beyoncé has everything going on for her. Will she ever have a year like this in the future?September 8, 2014 at 5:02 am #401733
Beyoncé is still the AOTY frontrunner until a single more viable option presents itself. I don’t see what that is yet. It’s another story of course if the BRP snubs her, but just about all the other major contenders cited have their cons (at least one), and Beyoncé’s pros have been cited many times before elsewhere which outweigh her cons. I’m keeping her in my AOTY predictions as well as maintaining frontrunner status. Not falling for this clickbait, and certainly not reading this nonsense until next February.
