Looking at some of people’s predictions here, it looks like there are a couple of solid favorites for Album (Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Weeknd), but there doesn’t seem to be much consensus on Best New Artist. There doesn’t seem to be an obvious choice breakout like Sam Smith, Macklemore, or Adele this year. Am I wrong? Is there a consensus forming, or is it kind of anyone’s game?September 25, 2015 at 2:35 am #412633
The BNA race is as wide open as it has been in a long time. There are no frontrunners for BNA, which is unusual this time of the year. This is one of the most interesting categories this year.September 25, 2015 at 5:42 am #412634
I think the last time BNA was this wide open was when Zac Brown Band won back in 2010… I wonder if another country act will benefit from the lack of clear favorites for the award.September 25, 2015 at 7:42 am #412635
Is Sam Hunt like the “it” guy in Country music? He might have enough support through in a relatively weak year.September 25, 2015 at 8:33 am #412636
Is anyonee even a safe solid bet for a nomination? Or could the entire list of five be a surprise?September 25, 2015 at 9:03 am #412637
Maybe James Bay is the only solid contender right now!
But I think that Leon Bridges could get many nominations in the R&B Field, so he could be the “surprise”.September 25, 2015 at 9:06 am #412638
Do we know for sure that people like Hozier and Meghan Trainor are ineligible? Ed Sheeran of course got in even when he had a Song of the Year nomination the year before.September 25, 2015 at 10:03 am #412639

This past eligiable year has been GREAT for country new artists… people from Chris Stapleton to duo Maddie & Tae, would be great representing the genre in BNA. Sam is definitley the “it” guy in Country Music right now… he has solid reviews, great sales and hit after hit in the country charts, but I wonder how “divise” he can be when it comes to awards… I say that because his sound is very “unique” compared to traditional country music acts (like Kacey Musgraves and Brandy Clark) and even country/pop crossover acts (like Hunter Hayes and The Band Perry), who were nominated in the recent past. It could really work for and agains’t him… I think he has a great chance to get through and once there, win with the lack of any major competitor (having the country vote and some extra ones going for his crossover appeal), but I wouldn’t bet on anything before seeing the nominees…September 25, 2015 at 11:14 am #412640
I have no idea who could qualify as such, but of the “new” acts I like and are in the popular orbit, hope Erik Hassle, Leon Bridges, Years & Years, Nick Jonas and FKA Twigs have a shot due to the open race.

My most current Best New Artist predictions are:
The WeekndSeptember 25, 2015 at 12:10 pm #412643
I need solid confirmation that The Weeknd is eligible before I’m predicting him. I feel like there is no clear ‘eligibility’ consensus. I’m pretty confident Leon Bridges could be a surprise nominee this year – and Sam Hunt + Tori Kelly could break through as well. fka twigs feels a little too late for a nomination, but then again I thought the same of HAIM and they were nominated (a year and a half after their debut album)
Other than that, I’m unsure of eligibility of Hozier, Walk the Moon and The Weeknd but if they are, I could see them getting nominated for sure.September 25, 2015 at 12:44 pm #412645
I’m hoping to get some of these eligibility questions answered soon before I launch the predictions center. If people like Hozier, the Weeknd, and Meghan Trainor are indeed eligible, this category won’t be all that wide-open anymore.
My suspicion is that at least Hozier and Trainor are. If Ed Sheeran was eligible the year after his Song of the Year bid, those other two seem likely, unless rules have changed since then.September 25, 2015 at 1:02 pm #412646
It would be an absolute mockery since The Weeknd’s first album went platinum and he’s already been a Grammy nominee. The Grammys had a chance to nominate him when “Wicked Games” was a hit back in 2012.
