This has more than likely been discussed before on this form, but oh well—doesn’t hurt to get some fesh conversation going!

I watched the “TLC” biopic again last night and it got me thinking:  are they the best girl group of all time?

I am going to answer with a resounding YES.  I don’t care who came before them or after them—their passion, creativity and charisma was extremely evident.  I also think that they are the only girl group to actually attemp to evolve their sound and look from album to album.

“CrazySexyCool” is among one of the best albums of the 90’s and should have easily receieved an AOTY nomination.

They may not be the best vocalists.but I think they trump all other girls groups in all other areas.

    What are your thoughts?

    I don’t know, maybe…

Before TLC is where I find the problem, I’m not too familiar with those possible girl groups and I know 50’s, 60’s, 70’s groups weren’t as great considering all of them had their Beyonce (Diana Ross) and none of them were a true “group”. The 80’s had a some pop groups that have some nice songs but none as great as the TLC catalogue.

If you look post TLC, all you can find is Destiny’s Child, but with Beyonce taking over the whole thing once she got rid of the other two…and then another one….she was left with a fine singer (Kelly) who she didn’t allow to sing as much and a mediocre singer (Michelle) who couldn’t even carry a whole verse on her own. The songs were amazing, classics to this day, but Beyonce and her family’s ways didn’t allow it be a true “girl group” like TLC was.

TLC had two good singers who did most of the job and they had a rapper who didn’t participate as much because well, she was a rapper, and not every song needs or has a rap and she couldn’t sing and rap like a Lauryn Hill-type of performer. You can totally say they were a true group with everybody participating equally and when they didn’t, it was because again, one was a rapper.

Other than that where are you going to find something as great as TLC? Spice Girls? Saturdays? and other pop groups like that? Please….TLC’s songs were great, some are perfectly written and performed, some are fun as hell, CSC is amazing, Fanmail is my favorite, 3D has at least one perfect song (Damaged) and then we know what happened.

So yeah, maybe they’re the best girl group, it’s not for nothing that they’re the biggest selling girl group (they are, right?).

I feel like they are definately in the top two but I kinda feel like the Supremes might be the best.

The Supremes are the gold standard. End of discussion. TLC could have been had Left Eye not died so soon.

I get why people are saying “The Supremes,” but I by far do not think it is the “end of the discussion.”

The Supremes quickly became the Diana Ross show, much like Destiny’s Child became the Beyonce show.   I don’t feel they meshed and worked together as well as TLC.   It’s hard to do so when one member gains so much prominence.  I also understand times were different, but they also really did not evolve their sound or image very much at all.   I feel like TLC had a lot of control over their music, etc.., particulary during and after the “CrazySexyCool” era.  I don’t think The Supremes did.  The Supremes also went through many members and besides Diana Ross and possibly Mary Wilson, I doubt many people remember or can name the other members.

Obviously, everyone is entitled to their opinions (which again is why it isn’t the end of the discussion), but I could go on listing why I think TLC was a better group that The Supremes.

I get the Ronettes but Danity Kane? Don’t get me wrong, they were good together but they seem to implode every time they try to work it out lol.

I agree with Troy.  The thing that was lacking with the Supremes and Destiny’s Child were that they were just star vehicles for Diana and Beyonce.  The great thing about TLC and ESPECIALLY the Spice Girls is how there was no leader and they they really were a group.

Sales-wise, the Spice Girls are considered the most “successful”, followed by TLC.

I would say TLC is the best girl group of all-time.  Their music is superb.  They never released a bad album.  I always felt TLC were ahead of their time, especially in 1999 when they released FanMail.

    TLC album rankings:

    1.CrazySexyCool
    2.FanMail
    3.3D
    4.Ooooooh…. On The TLC Tip

Favorite girl group rankings (this is tough):

    1.TLC
    2.SWV
    3.Salt N Pepa
    4.En Vogue
    5.Destiny’s Child

Why hasn’t anyone mentioned the Dixie Chicks? They had major acclaim and crossover success on the pop charts despite being a traditional country group.
