My favorite and best are The Pointer Sisters. Each member sang on songs and each of them had hits as lead singers.
Also, each of them were damn good singers. They might not have been glamorous, but they had a campy appeal and were nominated for Grammys in the fields of country, pop and R&B. They won in Country and Pop. They also give an amazing show.August 29, 2014 at 10:15 am #400106
Why hasn’t anyone mentioned the Dixie Chicks? They had major acclaim and crossover success on the pop charts despite being a traditional country group.
I can’t stand The Dixie Chicks. I know that is why I didn’t mention them. LOLAugust 31, 2014 at 8:17 am #400107
I’m a HUGE Dixie Chicks fan, but I guess I don’t think of them as a “Girl Group”, more of a “Band” I guess.
Dixie Chicks has had maybe three things that may make them borderline “girl group”: they’re girls, they had a huge scandal and they took the mandatory break.
Other than that, they’ve managed to stay away from the crap that follows every girl group or boy band including the questionable musical talent and songs (TLC doesn’t have that either but have plenty of the other stuff). Even with the break it was quiet and nobody made a huge deal out of it. And their scandal was for political reasons and not typical group things like cheating, drugs, TMZ type stories, fights between them, lineup changes, Beyonceisms and so on…August 31, 2014 at 5:45 pm #400108
I don’t think Dixie Chicks fit the mold of “girl group” per se.
We also shouldn’t forget 3LegendW and Blaque. RIP Natina Reed.September 1, 2014 at 9:13 am #400109
Honorable Mentions: Danity Kane, The Ronettes
I get the Ronettes but Danity Kane? Don’t get me wrong, they were good together but they seem to implode every time they try to work it out lol.
Lol true but you can’t deny their talent
True, they do have killer voices (even the shorter one that kinda blends in with the woodwork).September 6, 2014 at 1:44 pm #400110
Well its somewhat disrepectful to put TLC above The Supremes. They had far more hits than any girl group and paved the way for many artist after them.September 6, 2014 at 10:07 pm #400111
The Supremes had more hits but TLC had more substance as artists (and I love both groups). TLC made you think about a wide range of issues and produced quality music that influenced a slew of imitators (Blaque, 3LW, etc.).September 7, 2014 at 8:16 pm #400112
They were certainly very ambitious and make great music. However, I do think the Supremes were the quintessitial girl group. I also think The Supremes are severly underrated. They defined their era – at least for women and girl groups, and they were the biggest act to compete with the Beatles.
I think, even their music, is greater than people give credit for. Their hits such as “Baby Love” & “Where Did Our Love Go” have age well and still sound fresh.September 8, 2014 at 7:18 pm #400113
The Supremes paved the way for all female groups. They were very influential and had to fight racial barriers and other things that groups today would not know how to handle. If the choice was between The Supremes and TLC, then I would chose The Supremes.January 30, 2018 at 3:11 pm #1202483721
TLC has won more awards than the Spice Girls and have had their songs appear more on tv shows and movies and their songs have been covered more by other artists.
Spice Girls do not have any Grammy nominations let alone a single Grammy. TLC has several Grammys and MTV awards and have been nominated twice in the Brit awards and won once. Crazy Sexy Cool appears in Rolling Stones as one of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
In terms of awards and who is more critically acclaimed than TLC wipes the floor.
Spice Girls benefited during TLC hiatus between 1996 and 1999.January 30, 2018 at 7:05 pm #1202483834
Sorry, but The Pointer Sisters get my vote. They won a Grammy for Country Duo or Group for Fairy Tale, Pop Duo or Group Grammy for Jump and have received other Grammy nominations in R&B, Country and Pop. Each of them can sing and have sung on hits.
They also won a Grammy for Vocal Arrangement for Automatic.February 1, 2018 at 9:23 pm #1202485639

Fifth Harmony is the best girl group in the history of mankind!February 5, 2018 at 3:36 pm #1202488063
Interesting question and hard to say definitively. Of the modern post-1960’s era, TLC would clearly rank above all other girl groups but of all-time TLC is a close second after the supremes.
Here are my rankings for the top 5 girl groups of all-time:
1. The Supremes
3. En Vogue
5. Spice Girls
