I’ve been thinking about this the past few days. Very much aware of the rap bias here, but there are other factors to consider as well:

    1. It’s a weak year. If it’s not him, will it be Taylor? Outside of those two it’s hard to see anyone else winning, unless an acclaimed veteran gets in.

    2. Will people vote for him to make a political statement. No matter your opinion on society/political issues, they can make an impact on what someone may vote for.

    3. It’ll easily be the highest acclaimed album that gets nominated.

    4. The instrumentation and production of the album might catch the attention of some. I’ll admit I don’t listen to a ton of rap, but there’s a special quality about this album due to its structure.

Anything else I’m missing? Once the nominees are announced I may change my mind, but as of now I’m going out on a limb and saying Kendrick is in front to get this. Am I crazy?

As much as I want K. Dot to get it, Taylor appeals to a much wider branch. With Ryan Adams covering her album and the whole industry going bananas over her “fight” for artists getting paid, that should be enough to get her another Album of the Year win.

Kendrick definitely deserves it more than anyone, and hopefully, the voters surprise me this year. As long as he’s nominated and takes home something, I’m good.

Taylor deserves AotY with “1989” but I don’t think she’ll get it I can fully see Kendrick winning this year.

I won’t believe Kendrick winning anything in the general field until it happens.

I’d like to buy that but I wouldn’t be that surprised if he gets the surprise snub of the year, out of Album.

If Kendrick gets snubbed of a nomination in Album of the Year, I’d be done with the Grammys.

Oh man would I love to see Kendrick Lamar walk up onto that stage and accept the Grammy for Album of the Year. No doubt he deserves it.

Like other are saying, I won’t believe it until I see it.

If “To Pimp a Butterfly” gets snubbed that would be the biggest snub since “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.”

I really hope he wins, because his album is the perfect example of critical and commercial success, but if he wins the grammy will also go to:
Featured artists: George Clinton, Thundercat, Bilal, Anna Wise, Snoop Dogg, James Flaunteroy, Ronald Isley, Rapsody. It will depends on who Kendrick would choose as his featured artists and the academy eligibility for “featured”.
Producers: Dr. Dre, Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, Terrace Martin, Boi-1da, Dave Free, Flying Lotus, KOZ, Knxwledge, Larrance Dopson, LoveDragon, Rahki, Ronald “Flippa” Colson, Sounwave, Tae Beast, Katalyst, Taz Arnold, Antydote, Thundercat ,Tommy Black, Willie B, Pharrell Williams and Whoarei.
Enginners/mixers: James Hunt, Derek Ali, 9th wonder, Matt Schaeffer and others.
Mastering enginners: Mike Bozzi & Brian “Big Bass” Gardner
    CONS:
That’s a lot of people, grammys dont tend to award albums with that amount of people behind.
The album is not self produced, it has so many featured artist, so many songwriters.

I don’t see Kendrick winning, it will be nominated, but “Sound & Color” and “Black Messiah” fits more the criteria, so for me those are the frontrunners.
Last year, when everybody was predicting Beyonce, it was obvioulsy that Beck will win, this year “Sound & Color” will more likely get nominated for Best Engineered Album, if that happens, Alabama Shakes are the frontrunner, it was a weak year. “Black Messiah” has the veteran thing behind it. They are great albums so they will be great winners.

I don’t get why featured artists are included. If they didn’t play a significant role in the album process they shouldn’t be there. Being featured on one or two songs for 30 seconds on the album does not make an Album of the Year nominee. It just inflates the list.

I don’t even think songwriters are included in the nomination for AOTY, which makes the inclusion of featured artists even weirder.

58th GRAMMY Awards: Eligibility Guideline Changes

    Featured Artist – Definition

The Academy has adopted this definition to assist in the determination of featured artists:

    1. The artist must be credited and recognized as featured artist.
    2. There must be significant performance and artistic contribution by the featured artist beyond what might be considered merely accompaniment.

They has changed the featured artist definition, so we may seeing changes in that aspect this year.
