65 Metacritic score out of 22 reviews. Reminds me of Femme Fatale.
I think MDNA is pretty much on a par with Music which got a score of 80, but I guess Madonna could have put a out a near masterpiece and would not have gotten a higher score than lets say 70.March 27, 2012 at 9:23 am #380198
There are some very favorable reviews that haven’t been added yet. It’s unclear why, but it will probably end up closer to 70 when all is said and done. Pitchfork’s rating was WAY low. Since most reviews were mostly positive I was surprise by the “low” metacritic number. Then I realised that several good reviews are yet to be added. Still I don’t think the album will get more than a 70-75 on metacritic. A shame, since the bad reviews talk more about Madonna the pop star rather than MDNA or are mixed/midly good reviews that end up being 2 stars out of 5.
The album is doing great around the world and will be most likely #1 all over (the only big places still in doubt are France and Germany where at least will be #2). Fans and casual listeners are highly positive about the album so there is a small chance that WOM could still kick in.
Personally, I’m really happy with this era: great album, great videos, great looks, the Superbowl and another world tour coming. My only issue with this era have been the singles choices and promotion. Still, 1 or 2 more singles are coming and if she chooses something great (Gang Bang, TUTR, I’m Addicted, Love Spent) I’ll “forgive” her that too. A “Gang Bang” video directed by Tarantino would be her best thing in the last 10 years.March 27, 2012 at 3:44 pm #380200
Oddly enough, even though it has zero chance at radio, I think releasing GB as a single with a video directed by Tarantino would be the best move. The fans will eat it up, it will do amazing in the clubs, and it’s her best bet for creating some buzz after this week. Even if it’s not a hit, it will be all over the blogs and TV.
I do agree that the singles/promotion was screwed up. GMAYL was just a terrible move (it’s the only song I skip on the album – I almost wish they’d sequenced first so I could just start with track 2), but even if someone could justify to me as a “buzz” single for the Super Bowl, GGW killed any chance for a hit from this album. TUTR is the obvious choice, and I think “Superstar” had some potential too – it has that cheerleader beat that would have worked for the Super Bowl AND it reminds me a lot of Katy Perry. Those should have been the first two singles. I would have done:

This album is solid, not great. I think the first 1/4 of the album is very strong, but it falters a bit in the middle, then recovers slightly near the end. I’d score the album a 70/100.

About singles I would have done:
1) Turn Up The Radio (Superbowl)
2) Gang Bang (Album release)
3) I’m Addicted (Start of the tour)
4) Love Spent
5) I Don’t Give A or Falling Free
I bet there is a 4th single (not counting on a video though) GGW doesn’t have enough fuel to go until the start of the tour and I can’t see her going almost a year on tour with only one more single. Sticky&Sweet had “GI2M” and “Miles Away” and the second leg had the “Celebration” buzz. She needs to get Tarantino ASAP, film the “Gang Bang” video and release it at the start of the tour and then release “TUTR” sometime after that.
I agree the middle of the album is the weakest part. The “GMAYL”, “Some Girls” and “Superstar” combo is not the greatest and kills some of the momentum achieved by the first 4 tracks. The only bonus track deserving to be on the standard version is “Beautiful Killer”. I don’t like “I Fucked Up” and “Best Friend” and “B-Day Song” is fun but extremely stupid.March 27, 2012 at 4:52 pm #380203

^ Madonna has always been the exception. She’s very well-respected, AL and HC being the only recent exceptions, and even those received mixed reviews at worst.
Beastialg: “Beautiful Killer” is okay, but it’s pretty generic. I can see why it didn’t make the standard version. That doesn’t explain why “Superstar” and GMAYL did though. I like “I Fucked Up” a lot, and I like the lyrics and melody of “Best Friend”, except it wouldn’t have fit very well on the standard version.

How does Pitchfork hate her when have included “Hung Up” as one of the best singles of its year, and included “Ray Of Light” and “Don’t Tell Me” between the best singles of their respective decades? With exception of COADF (and even that didn’t get that great of a review), they think her albums these past decade have been lackluster when compared to her production in the 80’s and the 90’s. We can disagree, but it’s pretty clear they don’t hate her. Also, they didn’t praise more than half of the songs. That’s a pretty big exaggeration.
Also, Madonna doesn’t get a 60 grade because critics are ganging up against her or somehting like you’re saying. If that was true, then why Music and COADF have an 80? Critics are giving good grades because they feel the work is uninspired. Even the ones that recognize the album has qualities, mention how they feel the album lacks the passion and maturity of most of the previous albums in the past decade (that some of them didn’t really like to begin with). You’re kidding, right? “Don’t Tell Me” at #434? That’s some love right there. But whatever, the 00s wasn’t her best decade. More importantly, “Ray of Light” as a “see also” after #79 on their ’90s list? She’s absent from both their ’80s and ’90s albums list, AND shockingly, from their music video list. How do you make a list of music videos and not include at least ONE Madonna video? She’s a video pioneer. The only explanation is an editorial bias. They like her ’80s and ’90s work? Please. They’ve shown nothing but contempt for her. They’ve got their noses shoved so far up their indie-elite asses they can’t even give it up to Madonna for a fucking music video.
And sorry, they praised half (or nearly half) of the songs on the standard version. I realize now that they reviewed the deluxe version, so you’re correct. But either way, a forty-fucking-five? The bad reviews on Metacritic are mainly from the UK and some of them are done by terrible critics. Also, not all critics have it against her, but some of them do. Some examples:
Helen Brown from The Telegraph gave it 2 stars. The reviews starts with: “Carried into the Indianapolis stadium wearing a big gold head dress and 120 fake eyelashes last month for her super bowl performance, Madonna was clearly channelling Cleopatra – a great queen, who knew when to quit.“
The Independent, also from the UK and 2 stars: “In the opening seconds of her 12th studio album, Madonna apologises to God for her sins, the inevitable twist – telegraphed somewhat by the title “Girl Gone Wild” – being that she can’t give them up. And in case we miss the banal bad-but-good message, a later song goes “I’m a sinner/ I like it that way”.
And, God help us all, because MDNA (you see what she did there?) is the album on which Madonna, 53, has discovered drugs. Or at least, the tired old love-is-the-drug metaphor (“It’s like MDMA!”, she squeaks on the heavy handed “I’m Addicted”). The rest of MDNA is dominated by bog-standard club-friendly electronic dance-pop, courtesy of producers William Orbit (Ray of Light, Music), Martin Solveig and the Demolition Crew.
Madonna may have done this stuff first, but nowadays Lady Gaga does it better. MDNA? Meh-DNA.”

I didn’t say they LOVED her, I said didn’t hate her. It’s different. And pitchfork loves pop stars. For fuck’s sake, Beyonce got an 8.0 for “4”, Rihanna a 7.6 for “Loud” and Gaga a 7.8 for “Fame Monster”. They are not exactly shy about embracing this kind of music. Madge’s Interscope debut, MDNA, her 12th studio album and first under a recently inked deal with Live Nation, is her first new collection in four years, since 2008’s Hard Candy. It’s a lock for #1 on next week’s HITS Album sales chart, with between 325-350k, beating that album’s 280k opening.
I definitely underestimated the Queen of Pop. Congrats!
