Latin music has had a HUGE influence on popular music. Whether sung in Spanish, English, or both, these artists managed to crossover into mainstream culture. Demonstrated by their impact on the charts, airwaves, arenas, business ventures, and dance floors. However, which musician do you believe was and continues to be the biggest overall sensation? Discuss below.

(NOTE: The list of singers/performers is endless. Yet GD restricts these polls to only 10 options. So if there is an artist missing, please name them below. Thanks.)

As a native of Houston, my vote is Selena.

As far as WW sales are concerned, Gloria, Julio, and Santana are probably a head of the pack. However, I believe Shakira has made the biggest global impact. I remember her smashing records left and right with Fijacion Oral Vol. 1/Oral Fixation Vol. 2. “La Tortura” is one of my personal favorites.

In my opinion, Jennifer Lopez is a trailblazer. She reinforced the notion that a beautiful Latina woman can command a multi-million dollar salary, sell albums, films, perfume, clothes, and become one of the most iconic names in Hollywood.

Selena has been deceased since the mid 90’s yet she is still respected and glorified as a legend today. Her family has done an admirable job of maintaing her legacy. Except I’m not too sure about this supposed hologram coming out…. Yet it shows that interest in her music and story is still very much prevalent as it was two decades ago.

Enrique’s resurgence has been huge. I believe he has the longest running #1 song on Billboard’s Latin Charts and holds the record for most chart topping singles as well.

In the late 90’s Ricky Martin was THE crossover artist. He can still sell out arenas across the globe.

Daddy Yankee is probably the most noteable Reggaeton artist a long with Don Omar. I remember “Gasolina” being this massive crossover hit.

Hands down Santana and Gloria Estefan. When it comes to record sales, they lead the pack. They help pave the way for Enrique, Shakira, Selena, Ricky and many more. (My opnion of course)

Not trying to downplay the success and importance of the “younger” artists on this list, but I think what people like Santana and Gloria Estefan were able to achieve in the 70s and 80s, when we had a much less globalized world, was of a great value to the latin comunity and definitely helped to pave the way for the next generation of latin superstars.

Gloria, Julio, and Santana definitely paved the way and much respect is due. They made it possible for artists like Shakira and Ricky Martin to achieve even more WW success.

Honey, Ricky Martin is too queer for me.  He used to be fine back in 1999.

I think he’s aged very well. 90’s was definitely his peak.
