Which are the most overrated albums of 2016, those who received critical acclaim without deserving it in your opinion?

My answers are: Coloring Book by Chance the Rapper and The Colour in Anything by James Blake, both decent works and nothing more.

Also, Blackstar by David Bowie and Lemonade by Beyoncé were definitely great albums, they just deserved slight less acclaim.
And finally, a special mention to my beloved Radiohead: A Moon Shaped Pool is gorgeous, just not a masterpiece as many find it to be.

    Lemonade – Beyonce.
    Untitled Unmastered – Kendrick Lamar.
    Full Circle – Loretta Lynn.

These are the top 3. The first one got the acclaim because the Beyonce machine is PR genius. It is an okay album that literally has nothing to say and wastes the potential of many collaborations. I actually find her attempt to play pretend 21st century Nina Simone in the Lemonade movie quite offensive. It’s pretty easy to talk the hollow talk about the black female experience from where she stands. (And her voice is shot, despite all the lipsynching she’s done over the years) The Kendrick Lamar “album” is just trying to cash in on his Grammy momentum. Sure, there are interesting moments, but the lack of cohesion puts it way behind the rest of his work. And finally, I have no pleasure criticizing Lynn, but Full Circle is not well produced and sounds samey from beginning to end.

I love Chance but coloring book is way too gassed.

“(Lemonade) got the acclaim because the Beyonce machine is PR genius.”
LOL That’s so ridiculous. Like, did 33 professional critics at Metacritic give high praise regardless of the quality of the album? and haters gonna hate hate hate..

the album, because of how the film through which it was presented, and because of the collaborations, was always going to be well received. But Beyonce/her team knows how to build expectations, momentum etc. Some artists are flop-free because of how smart they are. The Metascore is proof of how things get out of control. I don’t in any way think it’s a bad album. I am not a hater of Beyonce – seen her two times in concert and have all her albums.

I find Lemonade overrated and not nearly the accomplishment her self-titled album was, but this thread seems like a mere opportunity for people to poo-poo on Bey.

Lemonade is overrated in my opinion. A couple of good songs there but honestly I have said it from the beginning that I wasn’t wowed by it. I also found “Wanderlust” by Little Big Town to fall into the same category. One of two good songs but the rest just there yet people really liked it.

    David Bowie, Blackstar
Radiohead, whatever that album is titled
    Rihanna, ANTI

Honey, I seen Beyonce in concert recently. And baby, she ate those songs from Lemonade up. #10sAcrossTheBoard

    “Lemonade” by Beyonce

This is the perfect example of critics overpraising an album based on star power and hype. A 5 star classic rating? Really Rolling Stone? A 92 on Metacritic? HA!

That’s why I don’t read critical reviews anymore. It’s all based on bias. I decide what’s good based on what I hear for myself. There are a few tracks on the record that are great stand alones but as an entire album, none of the tracks would work outside of the context of it’s visual.

I will say Beyonce has a great marketing team behind her. They know how to generate buzz for front loaded first week sales. They exploited her marriage (again) to get the media, blogs, and fans talking. I don’t hate the album but I think it’s terribly overrated.

    “Views” by Drake

This is one of Drake’s weakest albums. He’s had mixtapes better than this. Aside from the obvious hits, this record lacks any true depth. It just feels like B-sides without A-side material. The more Caribbean influenced songs like “One Dance” and “Controlla” are the real standouts. I’m a huge Rihanna fan and not even “Too Good” is that memorable or impressive. He’ll still win Rap Album at the GRAMMYs though.

I find it rare to across people who like Beyonce and don’t like Lemonade. Most of the (very few in number) critical comments on Lemonade are from people that feel Beyonce is overrated in general.
It’s by far the most conceptually advanced and sonically sophisticated pop album of the year. The musical ideas in songs like Don’t Hurt Yourself, Daddy Lessons and Freedom are very complex, not just in comparison to Katy Perry/Taylor Swift and all the other big pop artists out there, but in general, while also being friendly. I’m not saying Lemonade is ‘groundbreaking’ compared to some alternative releases- I’m saying it’s groundbreaking because no megastar has gone this far left-field with positive musical and commercial results.

Definitely ANTI. Also, but slightly less so, is TLOP. ANTI was an attempt by Rihanna at an artisitc album, but while some tracks were different, the album as a whole failed. It lacked cohesion, almost like she couldn’t decide if she wanted to do something artistic, or something commercial, or sjust add a few radio bops here and there to be safe. The album is just lacking. I really think Rihanna should just stick to albums like Loud and Rated R. She just doesn’t have the artistic vision and risk-bone to create something like what ANTI was meant to be (I mean even the videos were confused). TLOP is Kanye’s worst album. Hands down. Sounds like a confused mixture between Kanye and the other trap rappers out there. Almost like he had nothing to say, so he just brought in a bunch of ‘popular’ rappers right now to appeal to a younger demographic (why do older artists keep on trying to desperately attract younger audiences? It almost always backfires. Big example Madonna) ANTI is a 5/10, TLOP a 6/10.

Worst part about it is that some idiots keep thinking ANTI will be nominated for AOTY. I haven’t laughed so hard in my life.

Agree 100%. Lemonade is a really good album. I just wish she removed Formation and Love Drought/Sandcastles. However, even with these tracks, it’s still a 9/10 from me. And it’s her only album I actually like.

^ Absolutely. Love Drought, Sandcastles and Forward are the weakest tracks. They are both good but a little too generic for where the album is trying to go. All Night is also derivative but it works as the redemptive, forgiving end to the story. Sandcastles is aided by the fact that Beyonce delivers a really emotive vocal.
Formation, while a great track, would have served better as a hype track for the Superbowl and released to iTunes at that time (would have been No.1).
Lemonade is still 2 levels above something like 25 though.
