It was decent, but not as good as some previous years. The second half was far better than the first half though. The beginning was pretty messy and boring. I’m interested in seeing the reaction he gets for the Prince segment. I thought it was tastefully done, but they had their feud so…
“Man Of the Woods” is a good song. Probably should be a single. Video is cringey though.February 4, 2018 at 6:19 pm #1202487325
Terrible halftime show. So much backtrack. You couldn’t even hear him. Gaga’s remains the best.February 4, 2018 at 7:45 pm #1202487361
Mixed on the Prince tribute given the two’s history. Something about that reeked of appropriation, which is nothing new for JT, but still. Setlist was okay, but slow songs make the energy of this drag, so I would have excluded them entirely. “My Love”? “Suit & Tie”? “Until the End of Time”? Even “Cry Me a River” didn’t totally feel in place there. Definitely a missed opportunity with no N*Sync reunion. The crowd would have eaten that up completely. The finale with “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” was thrilling and had a sense of vastness that other stretches of songs lacked. Not a bad show, but underwhelming overall.February 4, 2018 at 7:54 pm #1202487372
I didn’t like it. I thought of unfocused, all over the place, songs cut too short, too many stages or sets, too much backtrack, even his singing parts were average.
I mean I wasn’t crazy about Gaga upon first viewing, I liked it later. So who knows maybe one day I’ll look at it differently.February 4, 2018 at 8:09 pm #1202487392
That halftime show was terrible.February 4, 2018 at 8:21 pm #1202487405
Was he sick or something? Did he sing more than 20% of the time during the show? -_-February 4, 2018 at 8:41 pm #1202487444
CBS ranked all halftime performances: https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2018-super-bowl-halftime-show-ranking-every-performance-from-prince-to-coldplay/
2. Lady Gaga
4. Michael Jackson
5. Janet JacksonFebruary 4, 2018 at 9:52 pm #1202487467
When competing with a new head like Bruno Mars, everything will look underwhelming in comparison. Good show, but JT is kinda old news, and his new music sucks. This could have been his Grammy redemption era (see the 2013 “snubs”), but nothing is really compelling about this era.February 5, 2018 at 4:36 am #1202487591
Finally listened to all of Man Of the Woods, and I also find the album underwhelming. I think the back half of the album was much better than the first half. Also, other than mentioning “woods” and “flannel,” this album did NOT give me a “man of the woods” vibe. It actually gave me more of a “man of the beach” vibe.February 5, 2018 at 5:06 am #1202487610
I appreciate Justin’s efforts at dancing and I liked the whole vibe, choreography and featuring of instruments. But Justin really has to work on his vocals.
Satisfactory performance. But pales in comparison with Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars.February 5, 2018 at 7:16 am #1202487685
I loved that halftime show! Only thing I would change is to add an NSYNC* Song (with the rest of the band there), goodbye Filthy, and add Janet on Rock Your Body.February 5, 2018 at 2:05 pm #1202488022
His halftime show was a hot mess. Too much of everything, too little of something.
It’s probably being trashed more violently than it would have if he wasn’t already going through the worst (and first, really) significant backlash of his career: four poorly received singles in a row, a widely panned album and a vague new image that no-one gets didn’t exactly pave the way for a smoothly received halftime show, especially given how controversial his history with Superbowl is.
Of course, he could have given expectations a big middle finger by delivering a knockout performance – that’s what Madonna did in 2012; after releasing a flop single and diving into the worst career slump of her three decades on top, she redeemed her crown in Indianapolis. No such luck with Justin.
He’s long overdue for a backlash of course; every superstar has them and it’s pretty amazing he’s essentially managed to avoid them altogether since he started out twenty-something years ago. It had to happen at some point.February 5, 2018 at 2:13 pm #1202488025
“Say Something” just made Billboard’s top 10 this week, so that’s some level of success, at least, and will help redeem the era and poor rollout.February 6, 2018 at 3:09 pm #1202488820
The projection for Man of the Wood’s first week sales has been declined from 300-350K to 250-275k.
How can this happen after Super Bowl?
