I’m surprised she doesn’t have her own thread already.

Anyway, Kacey Musgraves has become the unexpected country star this year in music. Her album, Same Trailer, Different Park, has received critical acclaim. She received 4 ACM Award Nomination earlier this year, including Top Female Vocalist. She was then nominated for 6 CMA Awards this past September, tying with Taylor Swift as the artist with the most nominations. She is also receiving a lot of Grammy Award buzz.

    Discuss everything Kacey related here.

    List of CMA Award Nominations:

    Female Vocalist of the Year
    New Artist of the Year
Album of the Year (for Same Trailer, Different Park)
Song of the Year (for “Merry Go Round”)
Song of the Year (for co-writing Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart”)
Single of the Year (for “Merry Go Round”)

On October 21st, Musgraves will release a new single titled “Follow Your Arrow”. In the song, which is on her album Same Trailer, Different Park, she tackles many controversial issues. She talks about Same-Sex Marriage and Marijuana in the chorus of the song, and throughout the entire song points out the hypocrisies in todays society. Go here to listen to the song.

I really like it. The thing that worries me is it talks about a lot of controversial issues, and I don’t think it will get a lot of country airplay. It deals with a lot of topics that country radio doesn’t want to talk about, and I think that means it wont get airplay.

Musgraves reminds me a lot of Gretchen Wilson. Someone who is strong in her beliefs, and someone who writes intriguing songs, and has a lot of talent (more talent than over HALF of the artists getting radio airplay on country radio today), but for some reason country music just doesn’t embrace them. I think the Grammy’s will embrace her, just like they do Gretchen Wilson, but I think she won’t be very popular in country music.

It should be noted that Musgraves (and Taylor Swift) is the only artist nominated for Album of the Year at the CMA Awards this year to have written or co-written every song on the album.

After giving “Merry Go Round” a couple of listens, I’m really curious to hear the rest of her album.  I’m not completely sold on her Grammy chances in the General field but if she slays at the CMAs, I’ll have to reconsider.

‘Follow Your Arrow’ is a fabulous song. She’s been fighting to release it for a while.

It deserves to be a big hit.

Follow Your Arrow is my favorite song on the album… To me, it’s like the country version of “You Can’t Win” by Kelly Clarkson. I hope it connects to people… Kacey needs a breakout. She may have the acclaim, but most people don’t even know who she is yet

I agree that she deserves to be a breakout star. But she is so controvesial in her views, and her views do not line up with those of country radio, which is why she doesn’t get a lot of radio airplay. Which is why people don’t know who she is. That’s one of the things that angers me about country music. If anyone out of the ordinary, or someone who doesn’t line up with their views, releases a big hit or is receiving a lot of buzz, they refuse to embrace them.

^^^ Well that right there is just it. If people are not embraced by everyone, that person is just going to have to learn how to live with it, but isn’t that what this arrow song is about anyways? Doing what you want no matter who hates it?

    God bless you always!!!

P.S. My only question is, does that no matter who hates it include the Lord too? Because I believe that not being sorry about going against his rules is only going to lead a person to big trouble eventually.

I’m not going to get into the religion stuff, because I can already see that going on for pages and pages, and it’s an argument that can’t be proven with facts. So I just won’t go there.

However, the thing that angers me about country music is their refusal to embrace songs that don’t fit their beliefs. It’s one of the most hypocritical genres of music, which is why it’s still not a hugely popular genre of music amongst young people.

Gave this album a listen over the summer when I first heard of buzz for Kacey and immediately fell in love. Such a simplistic, beautiful sound with meaningful lyrics. “Follow Your Arrow” was definitely one of the best songs on the album. Such a great message and a beautiful song.

Hoping she breaks through big at the Grammys. I can totally see nominations for Album, Song (Merry Go Round) and BNA.

That is what is so great about country. We stay true to what we believe and don’t let it get watered down by other things.

    God bless you always!!!

P.S. I heard this song on the radio for the first time tonight and while it was playing the word “joint” was never once said because it was edited out. (smiles)
