I recently got into a discussion with a friend who strongly feels that Prince is a better artist that Michael Jackson and feels that Prince should receive the accolades, etc.. that Jackson has received over the years.
I won’t go into all the reasons he gave, but some of it made sense.
Now I like Michael Jackson tremendously. I also like Prince. I am just curious–does anyone else prefer Prince? What makes one better than the other because they are very similar artists in a lot of ways.
Michael Jackson no debate.
So much debate. Lots and lots of debate. Debate coming out of the wazoo. Debate everywhere. Debate, debate, debate. Because Prince is a genius, and has a huge legacy even if he never reached the same level of success. MJ is more popular, but who cares? Prince not only actually surpasses him in acclaim (something MJ’s death makes people forget), but MJ never had the productivity and absolute freedom Prince had in at the height of his career, and neither did he take on as many different roles as Prince did with hismusic. Whenever people think MJ is ahead (as talented as he was), it just shows to me that person knows nothing about Prince except maybe a few songs. Prince is not at the level of MJ. He’s beyond that. The man is at Paul McCartney/Stevie Wonder level. There’s even a rumor that dates from way back that Quincy Jones had Prince’s 1999 album as inspiration for Thriller, and it’s quite clear how massive Prince’s influence was on pop and r&b back then, and to this day really even if he never danced with zombies on MTV. I love MJ and Off The Wall was a great album, but Prince is very much the more talented and overall more accomplished artist and musician.
MJ wins hands down and there is no need for explanation. Prince is cool too.
