The Weeknd could take R&B Performance / R&B Song, but I am betting on D’Angelo winning both of these and sweeping the R&B categories (winning 4 if he takes Traditional R&B as well).  We’ll see when the nominations come out, but as of now, I am betting on D’Angelo and the Vanguard being the big winners in the genre field.

Yep, I think if D’Angelo manages that R&B Performance nomination for the immaculate “Really Love,” he could take it. R&B Song as well, though I feel The Weeknd could take that one. The R&B field tends to play vet favorites as much as they do commercial favorites. That’s why Prince (beating out Usher with “Call My Name” in Usher’s mega year), Barry White and a slew of others were able to upset commercial favorites. And D’Angelo is definitely a veteran at this point and he is also an R&B favorite.

Sweeps aren’t as easily attainable in the R&B Field these days. The voters tend to spread the wealth among artists. There’s no question that D’Angelo will win R&B Album, The Weeknd has Urban Contemporary and possibly Song. But sometimes they like to throw a curveball in Traditional and R&B Performance. Corinne Bailey Rae anyone? What song did she even win for again? Or goddamn Snarky Puppy? It’s always some random, forgettable, person/band that beats out the heavyweights with multiple nominations.

Traditional R&B is rarely a random artist that takes the crown. Aside from Gary Clark, Jr. (who shockingly most pundits predicted to win over Fantasia anyway) and Robert Glasper (who won R&B Album a couple years prior and Lalah Hathaway won R&B Performance the year before), the trophy usually goes to a vet or Beyoncé. If D’Angelo fails at that, then I see it going to Tyrese or Jazmine Sullivan based on the submissions we have here. I would have to see what the nominees are for R&B Performance, but D’Angelo fits the mold of what’s been nominated there since 2012.

I’m not sure if The Weeknd can go 3/3 in the R&B field.  Hell, Beyonce could not do it last year and NARAS worships the ground she walks on.  Right now, D’Angelo and the Vanguard looks poised to sweep the R&B field (winning 4/4).  Or I can see a scenario where both D’Angelo and The Weekend win 2 R&B categories apiece.

R&B Album has the potential to be the strongest it has been in years if the voters actually take the time and vote properly.

A D’Angelo vs. Mary vs. Jazmine Sullivan vs. Jill Scott vs. Tyrese lineup is what I’m hoping for. D’Angelo would be the obvious choice here with Mary a close second, but all five of these albums would be worthy of a spot here and I wouldn’t consider any of them “filler” like some of the stuff we’ve witnessed here in the last few years.

I hope Tamia [Love Life] gets into R&B album as well.  Pretty sure D’Angelo will win R&B album.  I don’t see him winning R&B performance or song.

I’m feelin these predictions, esp. R&B Album. I wouldn’t be surprised if Terri Lyne Carrington or Stacy Barthe got in there though.
