Anyone else unimpressed with this year’s rather listless AOTY choices?
Back in the 1960s comedy albums not only were nominated but won AOTY. The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart won in 1961 and The First Family won in 1963.
I think the brilliant Live by Tig Notaro could easily best the efforts of most of this year’s nominees.
In 2000, Chris Rock for Bigger & Blacker would have been a better choice than AOTY nominee Backstreet Boys for Millennium
In 1983 Richard Pryor for Live on the Sunset Strip easily bests AOTY winner Toto for Toto IV
Has their been anything officially changed by the Academy that doesn’t allow Comedy albums into AOTY, or has comedy albums simply haven’t been nominated?
Same thing for comedians in Best New Artist. (Bob Newhart won best new artist in ’61 and Robin Williams was nominated in ’79)
I don’t think they have not been allowed. They just hadn’t been nominated. As far as I know only classical albums were not permitted to get an AoTY nod up until 2012
