R.I.P. Gerry Goffin `Up On The Roof’ Lyricist With Wife Carole King

    By JEREMY GERARD | Thursday June 19, 2014 @ 2:52pm PDT

He put the Bomp (In The Bomp Bomp Bomp) and found solace in the urban frenzy Up On The Roof: Gerry Goffin, who wrote the lyrics for some of the biggest pop music hits of the 1960 with his first wife, composer (and later singer-songrwriter) Carole King, died of natural causes this morning at his home in L.A., according to his wife, Michele Goffin. He was 75.

Goffin and King, who married in 1959 when he was 20 and she was 17, had their first major hit with Will You Love Me Tomorrow. Their other hits included The Loco-Motion, Take Good Care Of My Baby and Pleasant Valley Sunday, a hit for the TV-birthed group The Monkees. Goffin co-wrote Who Put The Bomp with his friendly rival. Barry Mann.

Goffin is a major character in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, whose star, Jessie Mueller, just won the Tony Award for best actress in a musical. King at first avoided seeing the show, which depicts their courtship, marriage and breakup, but has come to embrace it.

“Gerry Goffin was my first love,” she said in a statement released by the show’s publicist. “He had a profound impact on my life and the rest of the world. Gerry was a good man and a dynamic force, whose words and creative influence will resonate for generations to come.  His legacy to me is our two daughters, four grandchildren, and our songs that have touched millions and millions of people, as well as a lifelong friendship. He will be missed by his wonderful wife Michele, his devoted manager, Christine Russell, his five children, and six grandchildren.”

“His words expressed what so many people were feeling but didn’t know how to say. If you want to join his loved ones in honoring him, look at the names of the songwriters under the titles of songs. Among the titles associated with me, you’ll often find Gerry’s name next to mine,” King added.
