Just a suggestion, I would rename this thread “Rock & Alternative Contenders” since they both are two separate fields at the Grammys.

I really think they should have a Best Alternative Song or Performance category.  Makes no sense to me that there’s a Alternative Album category but not a song category.

Dave Matthews Band are likely to be nominated, but I’m less sold on The Shins. They were nominated only one other time, and that was when they peaked as a group, both in temrs of popularity, accessibility, and quality. This year is a bit weaker, but I’m gonna hold off on them for now.

I really think they should have a Best Alternative Song or Performance category.  Makes no sense to me that there’s a Alternative Album category but not a song category.

Most definitely. They should at least have someone represent the field rather than ghettoizing it even further by having someone perform who people haven’t heard of, but could be well received nonetheless.

Any idea where Jack White, The Black Keys, and the Alabama Shakes will likely submit? I’m confused because the lines between rock and alternative are blurred with Jack White and The Black Keys. Alabama Shakes could go to either blues or folk also.

It is tricky with those like with a number of other acts. Like whether Florence, Gotye & fun. will go Alternative or Pop. I’d say Jack White is more likely to be submitted to Rock than The Black Keys, since he was nominated there before with The Raconteurs. The Keys come off from a win in Alternative, it might be smarter to stay there in terms of winning again. But this is all speculation, we will have to wait for the submission lists.

Personally, here’s where I’d put them:

    Rock:

    Jack White
    The Killers
    Linkin Park
    Green Day
    The Black Keys
    Dave Matthews Band
    Evanescence
    John Mayer
    Nickelback
    Coldplay
    Matchbox 20
    Mumford and Sons
    Bob Dylan

    Alternative:

    Florence + The Machine
    fun.
Neon Trees (though it could go rock too, I highly doubt they’d want to compete there)
    Imagine Dragons
    Fiona Apple
    Lana Del Rey
    The Lumineers
    Alabama Shakes
    Gotye
    No Doubt

The rest I haven’t heard. But if I were to guess (or where I would personally submit them), that’d be it.

No Doubt cannot be in the Alternative field because they are not indie I think they’d probably be submitted to Pop… The Lumineers will definitely be in Folk.. and Alabama Shakes is more likely to submit in the Rock field… It is also highly likeable that Fiona Apple will be submitted to Pop. She also has higher chances there
