What albums/songs are getting in the rock categories? It’s almost a crime at how badly the music industry is wasting one of its most influential genres. Especially with more intriguing efforts falling into the Alternative Album category, where I’m assuming Radiohead is locked in for A Moon Shaped Pool to win. They seem likely to get Best Rock Song/Performance nominations for “Burn the Witch.”

I’d assume Coldplay are the frontrunners for A Head Full of Dreams in Best Rock Album, with “Adventure of a Lifetime” as frontrunner for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance, assuming it doesn’t submit as a pop contender.

The Red Hot Chili PeppersThe Getaway should get a Best Rock Album nomination. I’d pencil in their track “Dark Necessities” as a Best Rock Song contender, but I don’t know if it’s a lock.

I feel Twenty One Pilots have to get some sort of nomination, as they’re the only non-veteran act generating lots of business, so my guess is their “Heathens” song from the Suicide Squad soundtrack will get them a Best Rock song nomination, since their other big hits were released during last year’s eligibility.

What about Blink 182? They’ve never been nominated, and their “Bored to Death” track is their first Number 1 hit on the rock charts in 12 years. It looks like their California album is going to chart well this week. Does their departure of founding member Tom DeLonge help or hurt? I think they will get their first nominations in all three Rock categories in this fairly weak year.

Fitz & The Tantrums should be good for a Best Rock Performance nomination for “Hands Clap” and their self-titled album should be good for a Best Alternative Album nomination.

The Lumineers are also a strong possibility in the Rock Song/Performance categories for “Ophelia.” Their Cleopatra album is probably a lock for a Best Alternative Album nomination.

M83‘s Junk is a possible Alternative Album contender.

Who am I forgetting in the eligibility period? Weezer? Panic at the Disco?

    ROCK / ALTERNATIVE CONTENDERSS

    ALTERNATIVE ALBUM

    • “?(not released yet)” – Beck

    ROCK SONG

    • “Soul Sacrifice” – Santana

A couple notes for the list: Beck’s album will be out in October, just after the eligibility period. Soul Sacrifice is a Santana original from 1968.

Red Hot Chili Peppers are definitely getting into Album The Getaway – and “Dark Necessities” is likely to get Song and Performance nominations.

The Lumineers – IDK. Very folksy. Not as commercially adored as their debut.

Rooting for a Band of Horses nomination in any category.

Unsure if Coldplay will go Pop or Rock this year.

I would imagine Coldplay’s album and songs to submitted to Pop.

I wonder if the Chili Peppers might get the snub Foo Fighters did last year. I don’t think this will happen, especially without strong competitors. But it is not as strong as their previously nominated albums.

don’t you forget that since last year, the final nominees in in rock field are chosen by the special committee, so a lot of surprising nominees and snubs will probably happen here again 🙂

Although every year I’m very excited about the nominees in the Rock categories, somehow I’m always a bit disappointed with the winners.

I would love to see Garbage among the nominees again, as well as one of my favourite albums from this year: case/lang/viers, which I hope their label submitted to American Roots Song/Perf and Americana album.
