Werk, the Queen of Soul!
Aretha Franklin gave an amazing performance at the Kennedy Center Honors. The surprise live performance of “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” brought President Obama to tears.
Franklin here rivals her transcendent work at the 1998 Grammy awards where she subbed at the last minute for an ailing Luciano Pavarotti and performed a spectacular and soulful rendition of the aria “Nessun Dorma” from Puccini’s Turnadot that brought her fellow musicians to their feet in thunderous applause and cheers.
I have always thought defining statements were polarizing and foolish. Yet these two miracles nearly two decades apart provide reasonable evidence that Aretha Franklin is the greatest singer of our time.
