Since I created the R&B Snubs in the 80s thread, I thought that I create one for Pop in the 80s at the Grammys.

What snubs were you surprised by in the 80s?

I was surprised by the following:

Jack Wagner’s All I Need did not get nominated for Pop Male for 1985

Belinda Carlisle’s I Get Weak for Pop Female in 1988

Whitney Houston’s Greatest Love Of All for Pop Female in 1986

Aha’s Take On Me for Pop Duo or Group in 1985

The Pointer Sisters’ Freedeom for Pop Duo or Group in 1985

Culture Club’s Karma Chameleon for Pop Duo or Group in 1984

Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up for Pop Male in 1987.

Michael Jackson’s Man In The Mirror for Pop Male in 1988.

Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney for Say, Say, Say for Pop Duo or Group in 1984

Whitney was only elgible for record since she was previously nominated for AOTY the year before. She would’ve been a worthy nominee however.
The biggest snub of the 80’s was Madonna’s masterpiece (yeah I said it) Like a Prayer. It was robbed in the GF categories, so it at least deserved a Pop female vocal Nod for “Like a Prayer” or “Express Yourself”. Fuck the Grammys…

Whitney Houston did not win AOTY in 1985, so technically she should have been eligible for Pop Female in 1986.  Her label may not have submitted her there.  Not sure how the rules were back then.

Madonna wasn’t nominated for any of these songs/albums in the pop (or main) categories:

    “Holiday”
    “Borderline”
    “Like a Virgin”
    “Material Girl”
    “Live to Tell”
    “Like a Prayer”
    “Express Yourself”
    “Oh Father”
    “Vogue”
    “Take a Bow”

    Madonna
    Like a Virgin
    True Blue
    Like a Prayer

In fact, until the late ’90s, she was only nominated for “Crazy for You,” “Papa Don’t Preach,” and Bedtime Stories, which seems insane looking back now. The academy was so different in the ’80s and early ’90s. She wasn’t even nominated for Best New Artist.

^It was considered a milestone to be nominated for any award back in the 80’s. Also I read on the older forum that back then she wasn’t as respectected or taken seriously, with her image and controversial tactics. I don’t know if she made a big enough splash in 84′ to get into BNA. Her first album was criticized back than (to now where it is considered an 80’s Phenomenon.)
