This has been boggling me all day and I would like to see further discussion. Clearly this was someone who had her track made the cut, she would have won. Were voters just assuming she would make it in, and passed her by? Do they not consider “Formation” an R&B genre? Beyonce did vamp out into different areas of music with Lemonade, yet besides being cite for rock, rap and pop- failed to get in for her most obvious slot. Something rings false here. The case of voters assuming she would be in could then be justified for the other slam dunks she DID make (eg Album, Record and Song).
Also, has this happened in the past where an artist made the cut for ROTY for their big hit, but failed to make it in the genre’s category?

December 6, 2016 at 6:24 pm #1201963619Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin’ About You” was nominated for ROTY but was snubbed in the R&B field. M.I.A.’s Paper Planes was also nominated for ROTY but was snubbed in Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Let’s not forget about Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles”.
It has happened before, and the times that it did, they failed to get a win in ROTY.

Interesting. So why do you think “Formation” failed in the categories?

The R&B committee may have wanted to give some other artists a chance.
The committee may not see “Formation” as “R&B.”
The committee may not see “Formation” as worthy as the others.
I could be many things. It’s not really that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.

Because I started it. Answering the topic on hand would be the way to go here. Not getting a nasty attitude.

December 6, 2016 at 6:51 pm #1201963638Formation not being nominated in R&B was totally a shocker to me. Thought she would be a shoe in for these nominations, I still think she’ll win about 3.

Exactly- same with me. And posters are acting indifferent about it, yet these are the same people who predicted her to get in and would predict her to prevail.
Just goes to show that the Grammys are very unpredictable. All these “Adele will win ROTY and SOTY, Beyonce AOTY” are speculation. Things always get juggled around.
I wasn’t trying to push buttons by starting this thread. I truly am shocked at the exclusion and boggled. Glad to know I wasn’t the only one.

December 6, 2016 at 7:08 pm #1201963644Simply put, “Formation,” is not an R&B song. It’s closer to rap than anything else. Methinks she should have submitted to Best Rap/Sung Performance, but that would’ve split votes with “Freedom.”
ReplyCopy URLDecember 6, 2016 at 7:27 pm #1201963656But these are the same Grammys that nominated Hotline Bling in Rap so…Even if they’re different groups it still doesn’t make sense and the song actually deserves it.
Add Meghan Trainor to the list of people who didn’t get in their genre categories but did get ROTY and SOTY nominations.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 6, 2016 at 7:33 pm #1201963665I answered this in the AOTY thread, but again, I don’t think it’s anything more than the R&B oversight committee wanting to give a leg up to underrepresented artists. Other genres could actually look to them for inspiration. Recently, “Thinkin Bout You” and “Really Love” miss out on R&B Performance yet made ROTY. “Earned It” and “Drunk in Love” don’t make ROTY but win in R&B Performance. Maybe it’s becoming an either/or deal, and for a sweep to happen now in R&B Performance/General Field, it has to be for an undeniable song. It’s debatable if “Formation” is quite that. If it’s not, then expect more random-ass nominees in R&B Performance and major snubbed names finding their voter support elsewhere.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 6, 2016 at 8:41 pm #1201963705They needed to make room for Rihanna to get nominated across the board with ANTI ;).
ReplyCopy URLDecember 8, 2016 at 5:07 am #1201964661Probably the R&B committee did it to make more space for other artists. My main gripe is with Mya getting an R&B Album nomination over Maxwell. I am pissed.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 8, 2016 at 5:21 am #1201964667They don’t want her to beat Alison Krauss as the most awarded female artist. She has 20 grammy awards by now and she is just 35 years old, they will be careful awarding her from now on…

I don’t know why I think Beyoncé will walk away with just one grammy, maybe two.December 8, 2016 at 8:52 am #1201964749I am not pissed that Mya was nominated for Best R&B Album over Maxwell. I am pissed that some of the other nominees were nominated over him.
Maxwell’s snubs in Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Album will make it easy for him to win Best R&B Song. Voters only have one option to reward him.
