St. Vincent’s (Annie Clark’s) new self-titled album is getting rave reviews: 90 at Metacritic, 8.6 at P4K, and 9 at The Line of Best Fit. Based on momentum, it seems to me that this might be the album that this musical genius actually breaks through. In contrast, her previous three albums had Metacritic scores of 85, 81, and 78 and P4K reviews of 9.0, 8.5, and 8.0, yet she never even got one Grammy nomination. What are your thoughts?
Annie Clark is an extraordinary artist and has yet to put out a mediocre album, but I must say I thought her collaboration with David Byrne did not live up to her solo efforts. And when it was announced that she was clearly inspired by just that collaboration for her 4th solo album I was somewhat worried. But to hell with my doubts! She put out the best record of her career that will show up in basically every critic’s top 3 of the best albums of 2014.
“Rattlesnake”, “Birth in Reverse”, “Digital Witnesses”, “Bring Me Your Loves” are my individual favorites, but the complete album just flows so greatly that it is a true experience.
“Prince Jonny” has some Lana-esque moments, but that doesn’t hurt it.
Agreed, amazing album. I was nervous after the David Byrne collaboration album, and especially after “Digital Witness” sounded a lot like the collaboration stuff, but she kills it on this entire album, especially the slower songs. My personal favorites thus far are “Psychopath”, “Severed Crossed Fingers”, and “Prince Johnny”. I doubt it gets any Grammy traction, but it could have a slight chance to be a contender in Alternative Album (although sadly nothing outside of that).
One of my five favorite albums this year, along with the Sun Kil Moon, Beck, Against Me!, and East India Youth records.
And as a sidenote… the new Real Estate album is streaming now and is fantastic as well. Solid first two months of music this year.
