I know we are only half way through the decade but Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons, Beck and even Daft Punk to some extent. Only one Pop album has won. do you guys see an urban act winning this decade? Will a full country album ever win again? How about a mainstream act?

The biggest album of the decade won literally three years ago, and the last AOTY winner to not hit the top five positions on the Billboard 200 was back in 2000 (Steely Dan) – in what world do people need to wonder if a “mainstream act” will ever win an AOTY Grammy again?

Is this thread a joke? Of course AOTY nominees are mainstream. Beck is huge in his respective circle. So are all the winners of this category.

I’m not holding my breath, but it would be great to see an independent artist connect with the mainstream public and snag a AOTY nomination. But I guess then they would be considered ‘mainstream’, right? Independent means they’re not on an official big name label. Is there a Grammy rule that prohibits independent artists from getting Grammy nominations, especially in the Big 4 categories?

i don’t think I worded my thread right what meant by mainstream, I meant A major Top 40 artist. Someone like say Bruno, Rihanna, Bey ect. Basically can an album that has multiple hits ever win?

    Macklemore.

And maybe the Top 40 doesn’t win often because a lot of those albums are created for a handful of singles and the rest of the stuff is pure filler.

Again, the biggest album of the decade, which had three #1 hits, won THREE years ago.  It’s not like you have to look back fifteen years to find an AOTY winner with multiple hits.  I don’t think that should quite bring up the question of “can an album with multiple hits ever win again?”.
