Elton John. Ray Charles. Otis Redding. Marvin Gaye. You know what these guys have in common. They have HUGE legacies in music. Also, they are among the greatest artists of all time. This list is not limited to solo artists, so you can put Journey and The Band. Ok, lets have at it! Discuss!

Gold Derby actually did a 100 best of on the old forums. I wish someone would have saved those. Personally, my tastes are modern, so my picks will be more modern. These artists definitely contributed some important things to music, or presented their ideas in a novel way.

    The Smiths
    Radiohead
    Joy Division
    My Bloody Valentine
    Arcade Fire
    Talking Heads
    Pink Floyd
    Sígur Ros
    Björk
    Public Enemy
    Kanye West
    Pavement
    … etc.

I think this is most interesting if you can only choose one performer as the greatest. My choice would probably be Miles Davis. With Bob Dylan as runner-up.

The Beatles, Michael, Whitney, Carole King among many many others.

The best is probably Otis. Such a tragic short life.
