Arcade Fire are back with their first single from their upcoming album ‘Reflektor’. The title track features David Bowie and was produced by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy.

Official Anton Corbjin directed video for “Reflektor” HERE.

I love the new song. It’s certainly a newer, funkier sound for them, but it fits. Much like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs did with ‘It’s Blitz!’, I think AF will have no problem pulling off a newer, dancier sound. I can’t wait for this album (rumored for an October release).

What do you think of the new single? Are you as excited as I am for their follow up to the Album of the Year winning ‘The Suburbs’?

I think it’s less YYY’s and more Station To Station Bowie, but it’s still awesome either way. It’s also their best video. I’m so excited for this album.

I think there’s a decent chance they can get in ROTY with “Reflektor”.

I think the song is pretty great. I’m liking the new sound and the music video is awesome. However, I wish the song was shorter. I hate when songs go on and on for no reason. It gets very repetitive by the end. I’d be pretty shocked to see a song like this make it into ROTY.

I’m very excited for the new album though!! Arcade Fire never disappoints.

The song is essentially a disco song meets a Bowie song, so that explains the length conceptually. I don’t think it’s too long at all. It keeps building and building and building, and it introfuces new elements throughout. I think they earn long it lasts. And I do love long songs. Prince, Bowie, Velvet Underground, Isaac Hayes, LCD Soundsystem… When a talented artist has the right song, it’s worth making it long.

The comparison to YYYs was less about the actual style and more about how they changed up their sound without alienating their fan base.

I’m an impatient, economic person, so a song being seven minutes for the sake of being seven minutes irks me. And I don’t hear any building towards something. The song peaks at its midway point. It is a good song, a surprisingly good first single since AF have delivered pretty meh first singles so far. Hopefully the album will be a step up from The Suburbs.

I would argue that the YYY’s did alienate their fan base with Its Blitz. Though they gained a few fans in the process as well. And then they let all their fans down with their latest outing.

There are a few fans that seem to be rejecting their new sound, but that’s par for the course. Even Radiohead has gone through it. I think it all depends on whether it leads to expansion, a slight shift in fanbase or downright backlash. So far, I’d say Arcade Fire seems to be in the second, but it’s too early to tell and this could change in the upcoming weeks.

I also disagree the song peaks, at least in terms of offerring no variation. It isn’t aimed that brusque changes, but it is very dependent on build ups to the chorus, and developing on variations of said build up. Like an old seventies track. I can see this turning off a lot of fans whose tastes skew heavily towards rock and pop but not so much disco punk and new wave, as it does have disco-influences in structure, so much so this could’ve been an LCD Soundsystem song with a few minor changes. Of course, maybe people just don’t like it for itself, I’m just noticing a pattern that some people who seem to be turned off by the new song usually fit this pattern, but I’m not sure it’s enough to call backlash or some generalized behavior on the ones who didn’t like it, at least not yet.

Rambling now, but I love this song, already on its way to being one of my favorites of theirs, but I can understand why some wouldn’t like it. And seven minute songs (or longer) are awesome.

This is a disco song essentially so damn subtle change-ups. If there’s no obvious variations I don’t see the need to be seven minutes. Would the song be any less good if it were five minutes? But perhaps if I thought it were an awsome song as opposed to a merely good one I would be more okay with the length.

I freakin’ love this song… At first I was a little worried – I seriously thought it was another remix of “Sprawl II”, and it started out a little too chill, but after around the 3 minute mark, it just gets amazing, and the more I listen to it, the more I love it. Can’t WAIT for the new album now…

I love that they could have released something more radio-friendly or commercial for their first single, but instead they chose this odd and experimental sounding 8-minute long track. And how freakin’ cool is it that Bowie is on it? Reflektor to sweep the general field next year! Album, Record, and Song! heh…

The song is great. But there’s no need for it to be so long. It doesn’t build up to anything, it’s just the same song for those “extra” minutes. They’ve done long songs or two part songs before that actually justify their length.

It doesn’t build up towards something different or new within the song, but it keeps building on a very strong foundation. it’s a matter of taste, but it isn’t unjustified. I actually like the song more because it’s a change from the build up to sonic catharsis they did in their first three albums. It’s less about structure, and more about craft, mood, groove, and detailing. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. I think this is already better than anything from The Suburbs, and I really liked that album. There’s only so much they could do with the formula of “quiet, build up, soaring chorus, build up, EXPLOSIVE ENDING” they did so much in the previous ones.

‘Reflektor’, as rumored, will be a double album, narrowed down from 50-60 songs the band wrote. It’s due out on October 29th. They will also be performing on the season premiere of SNL (with host Tina Fey) on September 28th. Hitfix has the full story HERE.

I was undecided with my first listen, but in love with the song upon my second listen. It’s great. And, as a band, you know you’re the shit when David Bowie agrees to do back up vocals for you.  Just saying.

The song’s length doesn’t bother me.  I’m usually against these endless songs, but there’s something about the rhythm that I get lost in.

    I can’t wait for October 29!

Just pre-ordered my copy at the official web site! Apparently people who do this have first access to tickets when they go on tour… So excited!

I’m a huge fan of this band and I’m loving their new direction. The length of the song is not a problem for me. I’m getting a Bowie vibe that has be intrigued, especially considering my love for Bowie.
