Ariana Grande now has one of the year’s best debut albums in ‘Yours Truly’, a Mariah Carey-esque ’90s throwback R&B/pop album. Top 10 hit “The Way” was only a hint of what Grande has to offer. Second single “Baby I” is excellent, and the album features other highlights such as “Honeymoon Avenue”, “Tattooed Heart”, “Piano”, “Daydreamin'”, “You’ll Never Know”, and “Almost Is Never Enough”. With strong production all the way around, solid lyrics (many co-written by Babyface), and excellent vocals, Grande could be a strong contender in BNA at this year’s Grammys. She certainly has a great future ahead.

I agree, it’s a great debut. She could definitely get in if the buzz heightens within the next few months. WIth contenders like Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Imagine Dragons, Emeli Sande, Kendrick Lamar, Kacey Musgraves and others, it’s kind of hard to predict who’ll get in this year, but I think Grande and Lorde could battle it out for the last slot potentially. Both would be deserving IMO.

    “Honeymoon Avenue”
    “You’ll Never Know”
    “Almost Is Never Enough”
    “Baby I”
    “The Way”
and “Lovin It” are great album tracks. She definitely has Mariah’s 90’s sound down pat. She has potential to go far. I think her sophomore effort will be bigger.

It’s a cute album, I like the singles, and I think she has potential. It’s still too uneven, and sometimes, downright cheesy. But the 90’s throwback has its charms, and I like her voice. I do wish the album was shorter. If she gets nominated, I hope she doesn’t win though. But it is a rather strong start, and she is talented, so let’s hope for the best.

I think my biggest issue with this album is its length, and the lack of diversity. It’s fine to have a specific sound, but after a few listens, it gets kind of, well..boring. Still, it’s a strong debut, and she’s a promising young talent. Also, with 4 reviews, her album is sitting pretty with an 87 on Metacritic.

What a lovely surprise this was! Listen on Spotify and got my entire life. While her peers are wearing blackness like it is a Marc Jacobs bag or serving messy vocal realness (the Latin wonder twins), she is the truth and a godsend. You go, Ariana Venti Grande! Hopefully she’ll get some Grammy love.

I think both Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato are far better than their peers.

It sounds so much like a Mariah album…I don’t find it very original.

The difference is that a Demi song is a chore to sit through, but Ariana’s whole album feels like an effortless listen (maybe too effortless even).

I agree it isn’t very original, and that the Mariah throwback vibes are maybe too obvious and constructed to build her some kind of cred. And like the said, the album does have a certain sappiness even if it does have much more solid to excellent songs than most of teen-pop artists debuts. But people usually cut some slack for debuts, and I think most are more interested in her potential and the fact she feels like an alternative to her more desperate/annoying counterparts (that includes humorless Demi). Either way, “Baby I” and “Piano” are really cute pop songs and I think she deserves quite a bit of the attention she is getting right now.

^I don’t find Demi’s album to be a chore at all. I quite like it, even a little more than Grande’s. And I don’t think Demi’s album is humorless. She has fun songs on there, it isn’t all serious. But I enjoy the serious songs too. “Shouldn’t Come Back” is a beautiful song.

I think Ariana Grande has a great chance to make an impact at the Grammy’s. She is getting so much credit for producing great music with great vocals. Yeah it may be a lot like Mariah, but Mariah hasn’t produces music in a while and Ariana is like no one else at the top of the charts. If Ariana Grande enters as a pop artist in the pop categories, she might have a hard time breaking in. But I think if she can enter in the R&B categories she could make a big impact because those categories tend to have less competition.

Even Demi’s “fun” songs lack a feeling of energy or celebration. It’s all done in that Kelly Clarkson/Pink vein of music that people here know how I feel about it. It’s that kind of manufactured pop that tries too hard to come off as authentic and it’s too earnest for its own good.

Ariana is manufactured pop as well, but it’s breezy, smooth, cute and truly fun, and in a way that doesn’t feel like pandering even though it’s very radio friendly. It’s even weird it came out so late in the year, because it’s very much a summer album. That said, I don’t know if I’d even include it on top 20 albums of the year (simply because this is a really stupendously strong year), but it’s a strong start.
