Coldplay secretly dropped their new single “Midnight” today, and it’s a huge departure from the pop explosion of ‘Mylo Xyloto’, instead going for a very minimalist atmospheric sound. The song was accompanied by a very moody video featuring Martin raving in the woods in stark black and white. You can hear the song and see the video HERE.
After a few listens, I’m digging this song. As several fans have already started pointing out, it sounds like ‘Parachutes’ by way of Bon Iver/Imogen Heap. I really like it. I hope this is a taste of what they’re going for with the sound of their next album (due sometime later this year).February 25, 2014 at 11:54 am #398174
It sounds like Bon Iver singing a James Blake song, but in a good way. Kudos to Coldplay for changing their style.February 25, 2014 at 12:36 pm #398175
^Yes, I can hear some James Blake in there too. It’s actually very pretty, and I’m digging it more and more with each listen.March 2, 2014 at 9:45 am #398176
“Magic” is premiering tomorrow! Word is that this will be the official first single. “Midnight” is a grower for me. It’s very Bon Iver heavy (which I like), but I’m not sure how I feel about the band going this route. I am excited for a new album, I think the band still has a lot more to offer. “Mylo Xyloto” worked as an album–the tracks came together to create one idea, but there were no standout singles for me off that album.March 2, 2014 at 3:43 pm #398177
^I kind of agree with your assessment of ‘MX’, but I think “Hurts Like Heaven” should’ve been the definitive single from that era. It’s a shame it wasn’t.March 2, 2014 at 9:00 pm #398178
There is a banner up on iTunes for the new album, May 19!March 2, 2014 at 11:07 pm #398179
“Magic” is AMAZING. Seriously, their best song since “Clocks”/”The Scientist”. I am now highly anticipating ‘Ghost Stories’. This could be their best album since ‘A Rush of Blood to the Head’.March 3, 2014 at 8:52 am #398180
I really, really love “Magic”. The production is perfect, and Chris Martin has returned to the vocal and lyrical stylings of the first two Coldplay albums; simple, but thoughtful and beautiful. Along with Beck’s “Blue Moon”, this is easily one of the best songs of the young year.March 3, 2014 at 9:15 am #398181
“Magic” is GRAMMY worthyMarch 4, 2014 at 6:15 pm #398182
I love the vibe of Magic, it’s such a chill jam. Lyrically, it’s pretty simple, which works for this song but it keeps it from being up with my other all time favorite Coldplay songs. I could listen to this though over and over and it’s really peaked my interest even more for Ghost Stories. I think “Midnight” could be genius within a specific context and I hope these nine tracks are Coldplay gold.
I think Magic is too subtle and the lyrics too uninspired to get a record or song nomination, but if Ghost Stories can somehow connect the chill Magic with the mysterious Midnight and create a unique listening experience across the album I’ll fully support an AOTY nod regardless of commercial performance.April 20, 2014 at 7:33 pm #398183
The next single is “A Sky Full of Stars”. This is supposed to be the radio-friendly single, being released the beginning of May. We may hear it before then, and I expect to hear it for sure on SNL. Did anyone read about the LA taping? There’s going to be an NBC special and a DVD at some point and the entire album was performed for this. “A Sky Full of Stars” pretty much got universal acclaim from the articles I’ve read and reviews of the lucky ones who got to attend.April 22, 2014 at 8:13 am #398184
I’m really looking forward to this next single, and really the whole album. It sounds like it will be very different from Mylo Xyloto (toned down), and I think that will work in their favor. If “Magic” isn’t the radio-friendly song off their album, I’m very curious to hear “A Sky Full of Stars”…April 27, 2014 at 9:25 am #398185
There are some okay quality recordings of a LIVE version of ASFoS. Can’t wait for the recorded version because I feel there’s more to the production that gets missed in the recording I heard, especially with the audience background noise. It’s lyrically simple, somewhat piano-driven but also very upbeat! Could easily be their highest charting song since Viva.
About half the album has been played live, it’s obvious it’s Chris’s breakup album. There’s a lot of old-style Coldplay in some of these new songs.
My early thoughts:
–Combination of Parachutes style and some of their more recent sounds.
–ASFoS IS going to be the “hit” off the album. I can already see myself listening to this in my car on some warm summer nights. It would be killer to see live also.
–I think this album will be more favorable than Mylo Xyloto, therefore, I think if it scores better critically with some commercial success I can see this getting either an AOTY or ROTY nomination.April 28, 2014 at 4:51 pm #398186
ugh, i take back my earlier thoughts. ASFoS is produced by Avicci, who is enjoyable in his own right I suppose but I’m not sure if I have good feelings about this anymore.
Here’s a link from some studio snippets that were played during Chris Martin’s radio interview
