“Ugly” and “So Blue” sound decent. I’m sure Fantasia will score some R&B nominations.May 9, 2016 at 10:07 am #1201826113
“So Blue” is pretty decent.
Fantasia’s album is very “Pitchfork-y”. I wonder if this album will have some experimental tracks on it. Fantasia tends to play with different sounds anyway.May 9, 2016 at 3:50 pm #1201826324
“So Blue” is ok. “Ugly” is boring. Fantasia frustrates me because she’s such a dynamic performer and vocalist, but that energy rarely translates to her recorded material. I want a gritty, soulful, gospel album from her. I’m tired of the generic songs with blah productions. I want her to let loose and give it to us. “Free Yourself” was a good start.May 9, 2016 at 5:30 pm #1201826341
I don’t think Fantasia has ever put out a generic album before. I’m actually not sure what “generic” would be for her. A gritty, soulful album from her sounds like it would be too typical for a singing like her and would be boxing her because she’s black and has a big voice. A person with a big voice doesn’t always have to sing soul or those old school numbers. She’s not old. I think Fantasia was on the right track with her last album… going with an urban contemporary sound vs. the traditional R&B sound that most R&B singers these days are known for. I also think Fantasia’s album tracks are typically better than her actual singles.May 9, 2016 at 5:41 pm #1201826344
Fantasia’s first two albums were pretty good. Her last two, tho, have veered into basic urban contemporary territory. She’s better than that. I don’t think she needs to always sing soul or old school numbers. However, she has a naturally soulful voice that I feel doesn’t get put to good use when she sings forgettable material like “Ugly.” I do agree that her album tracks tend to be better than her actual singles.May 9, 2016 at 6:19 pm #1201826351
Her new material is underwhelming but that album cover is amazing. She rarely disappoints performance or music wise.May 10, 2016 at 4:45 am #1201826429
I must be alone because although I found “So Blue” a little underwhelming, “Ugly” is my favourite song at the moment. Lyrically and vocally its flawless and there’s a little country feel to it which is really nice. I have never actually bought and listened to one of her albums fully but this one I think will change that.
