Following his breakout debut album ‘Cole World: The Sideline Story’ which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist and featured his hit song “Work Out”, J. Cole’s sophomore album ‘Born Sinner’ drops on 6/18 facing of with Kanye’s ‘Yeezus’.

The album has leaked, and having heard it, I’m happy to say that it trumps his debut in every way possible. Not only is it thematically consistent and features some of his best rhymes and darkest and most honest material yet, he also produces every track himself and the results are very impressive. In my opinion, it should be an AOTY contender, and the first real threat to Kendrick Lamar for the best rap album of this Grammy year.

His current single “Power Trip” featuring Miguel has reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Big mistake!  He should not be releasing the same day as Kanye.

It’s a risky move, but I think it could potentially boost both of their sales to be in a “battle” of sorts. Remember the 50 Cent/Kanye battle? Kanye beat 50, yes, but both of their sales were strong right out the gate.

Moving his album up a week to compete with Kanye is a really smart move actually, because J Cole is a good rapper with a strong fanbase now that date will be forever remembered as not only the Yeezus release date, but the day when 3 (inducing Mac Miller) hyped albums were dropped to hopefully great acclaim, just like the Kanye/50 Cent date. I mean, Kanye’s album will be talked about for weeks after, and moving up Born Sinner will prevent J Cole from being overshadowed and largely ignored. Plus, Yeezus is obviously going to sell way more than Born Sinner and everybody including J Cole are aware of that, but they’re hoping that that little competition will increase buzz and lead casual rap fans who weren’t interested in J Cole before into checking him out when they are on iTunes or at the store buying the Kanye album, giving him a little sales boost.

I listened to the album last night. Cole tweeted last week something to the tune of “no sense in pretending that the album didn’t leak” so he’s doing a (legal) free stream of the album on BornSinner.com

    J. Cole is no 50 Cent.  He should really push his album back a week or two.  I mean, is there any buzz for J. Cole’s album?

There’s a lot of buzz for Cole right now. He’s currently on his “Dollar and a Dream” Tour where he’s going to select cities and doing $1 shows at secret locations.  Fans get in on a first-come-first-served basis – he’s been tweeting the concert venues as he travels from city to city.

Also, the album has been getting a LOT of attention as evidenced by Twitter and for obvious reasons, these $1 concerts are only helping to increase his buzz.

All that being said though, I do agree that he will not outsell Kanye. He just doesn’t have a big enough profile. If 50 Cent (who was significantly more popular & successful in his prime than Cole is now) couldn’t do it, then Cole definitely won’t.

J.Cole once again delivered with this album. Next to Kendrick Lamar he definately released the best Rap album of the elgibility period. Very deserving of the 300K that he’s predicted to push first week!

The big thing helping Cole (and hurting ‘Ye) is that Cole has a hit song at radio (“Power Trip” featuring Miguel) and another just impacting radio (“Crooked Smile” featuring TLC). ‘Ye has no hit songs at radio (in fact, he isn’t pushing anything to radio, period), plus he has no videos, no concert, and next to no promotion. But Kanye has said on multiple occasions that with this album, he couldn’t care less how it sells. That being said, I think on name alone he’ll still edge out Cole. But not by nearly as much as people were expecting.

Right. J. Cole won’t lose to Kanye by 300k!

And he has enough buzz to push about 300k, according to HITS! Egg on your face, huh?

I dont know about that. J.Cole is the same guy who did around 250K first week with his debut w/o a radio single. He clearly has a core fanbase. As for Kanye, I think the whole no radio single, promo, last minute release worked for him. He’s a smart guy. The album isnt that great but who cares ? he’ll dominate the rap field again. I feel bad for Kendrick Lamar and J Cole. Drake got lucky last year.

^Not that great? Hmm.. I think ‘Yeezus’ is pretty damn awesome. Most critics seem to agree. Granted, it’s all down to personal taste, and this album is definitely his most divisive. As for J. Cole, he had a little song called “Work Out”, no?

“Work Out” didn’t become a hit until AFTER J. Cole’s album was released, though. That 200k was purely on his mxtape buzz. Subsequent sales were thanks to the power of “Work Out.”

^Ah, wasn’t sure. Either way, I think he’s in much better shape all around this year. I expect him to get at least 3 Grammy nominations (Rap song, rap album, rap/sung).
