It’s the Weeknd’s world, and we’re just livin’ in it, baby!

After an improbable run of features and Billboard hits (“Love Me Harder,” “Remember You,” “Earned It,” “The Hills,” and soon-to-be #1 Song of the Summer “Can’t Feel My Face”), the Weeknd’s second major studio release, Beauty Behind the Madness, is scheduled for release on Friday, August 28, 2015.

Besides the potential smash factor that this album can/will have, there’s also Grammy prospects to consider, including major General Field nominations (Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, & Best New Artist) and multiple genre fields that are gettable with the right campaigning. Music Video could be a possibility as well.

Here is the new video for “Can’t Feel My Face,” which is brilliant and unexpectedly subversive:

I’m also anticipating that he’ll also be one of the first musical guests booked for the 41st season of “SNL.”

What do we think of the Weeknd’s future critical and commercial prospects?

    Discuss.

Yes! I was going to make this thread last week but didn’t, but glad it exists. I’m so hype for this album. I’m really expecting very big things. EW had an article a few weeks ago about why there are no male pop stars but The Weeknd could make a run for it, even if he is primarily R&B. A few songs on the album similar to “Can’t Feel My Face” could secure that for him.

I’ m very excited for this new album. “Can’t Feel My Face” is one of my favorite songs right now, and hopefully it goes to No. 1 next week or the week after.

This post makes me so happy! I’m a HUGE fan of The Weeknd and I’m so delighted to see him blowing up. I feel like a proud father, haha! I think his move to incorporate more pop elements into his R&B-tinged music was very smart. You should all read the in-depth profile by NYTimes Magazine on The Weekend, here: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/02/magazine/can-the-weeknd-turn-himself-into-the-biggest-pop-star-in-the-world.html?_r=0

Beauty Behind the Madness is sure to be a smash. I’m predicting he’ll earn several Grammy nominations come December. He’ll definitely make it into the Pop Vocal Album and Pop Solo Performance categories, if not the General Field. Also, I’m gonna need a definitive answer on his BNA eligibility ASAP!

And don’t forget – he will also be featured on the new Disclosure album, Caracal, out in September…the (6 minute, 44 second!) song is called “Nocturnal” and it’s the album opener.

This guy is doing everything right this year. After his last album, I really wanted him to take on a more melodic sound, and he has. He has great talent, but his music (especially across an entire album) was sleepy. I don’t want him to go full on pop, but I’m hoping mixing in “Earned It”, “Can’t Feel My Face” (and hopefully a couple more) with his more moody stuff (like “The Hills”) is going to create a Grammy-worthy album.

I had to shake my head in disbelief watching Tom Cruise on The Tonight Show lip synching “Can’t Feel My Face.” It’s a terrific song and video, but I had to wonder if Scientologist, anti-drug crusader Cruise understood that the lyric addresses cocaine addiction.

“Can’t Feel My Face” is the new Billboard #1 dethroning “Cheerleader,” and the first for The Weeknd!

Between “I Can’t Feel My Face,” “Trap Queen” & “In Love With the Coco”, have there ever been this many huge cocaine songs charting all at once?

Has anybody listened to the 18-minute preview “The Leak” or actually listen to the leaked album yet?

I couldn’t help myself and listened to the entire album. It’s great. A wonderful mix of the vibe from “Trilogy” with this new alt-pop/R&B sound from “Can’t Feel My Face.” The lyrics and production are great. “Earned It” feels just a little out of place, but I get its placement. My favorite (new) tracks are “Losers,” “Tell Your Friends,” “Shameless” (this song is amazing), “In the Night” (probably the next radio single), and “Prisoner.” Can’t wait to see people’s reactions to this album!

Some more The Weeknd news while we wait for the reviews to surface:

New video for “Tell Your Friends” premiered a couple of hours ago (co-produced by Kanye West). I’m guessing that this is the next single. It’s quite dark and operatic.

Loving “Tell Your Friends” – and loving the trilogy story of the 3 videos he’s released for “The Hills”, “Can’t Feel My Face” and “Tell Your Friends” – the creepy dude who was in all 3 videos was finally killed in the final video. Almost like an ‘eff you’ that Abel is saying to the haters calling him a sellout. He’s making music he wants to make.

CAN’T WAIT FOR THE NEW ALBUM !

    USA Today’s review isn’t good. :-/

Album of the week: The Weeknd

Patrick Ryan, USA TODAY 1:18 a.m. EDT August 25, 2015

Selling out has rarely sounded so good.

In late 2010, an unknown artist known as The Weeknd slinked
onto music blogs and into R&B fans’ playlists with his gloomy, carnal love
songs. Through the power of word-of-mouth, the evasive troubadour (real name:
Abel Tesfaye) gained an early champion in rap titan Drake and played sold-out
shows years before his formal debut album, 2013’s Kiss Land, hit. And
yet, his brooding sound and private persona stymied him from ever crossing over
    into the mainstream.

That all changed this past year, with well-placed
contributions to the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack and an enviable
feature on Ariana Grande’s top-10 hit Love Me Harder. With pop
super-producers Max Martin and Peter Svensson behind him, The Weeknd has since
charted three top-five smashes of his own—including the Michael
Jackson-channeling Can’t Feel My Face, which grooved to No. 1 on the Billboard
Hot 100 singles chart this month. He also got what may be 2015’s closest thing
to a career coronation: a Face duet with Taylor Swift on her 1989 World
    Tour this summer.

Which brings us to The Weeknd’s second album, Beauty
    Behind the Madness
, arriving Friday with the weight of expectations on its
shoulders. Is this truly the bedroom-soundtrack Messiah we’ve waited for, or
did he lose his touch somewhere on the road to global dominance? The latter, if
his polished, but regrettably soulless Beauty (** out of four stars) is
    any indication.

“Tell ’em this boy wasn’t made for lovin’ / tell ’em
this heart doesn’t stay to one, ” the album’s stilted, stadium-rock opener
Real Life begins, setting the tone for the emotional whiplash The Weeknd
subjects himself and others to throughout its 14 tracks. On the
wish-fulfillment As You Are, he’s something of a musical Magic Mike:
crooning over sleepy synths how he’ll take a lover despite all her scars and
flaws, only to backtrack three songs later on the mawkish Angel,
admitting he’s a sinner and wishing her luck in finding someone new. In The
Weeknd’s world, love is messy, but it’s also riddled with clichés, as he
recycles tired braggadocio about chasing money, girls, and parties nearly
    every song.

Where Beauty finds salvation is in its starry
guest roster. Although the seemingly well-matched Lana Del Rey doesn’t ignite
sparks on Prisoner, crackling guitar duet Dark Times with Ed
Sheeran is a first-class ticket to Swoon City. On the Labrinth-assisted Losers,
The Weeknd maneuvers a sulky, percussive EDM banger with surprising aplomb,
while Kanye West steps in as producer/backup vocalist for Tell Your Friends,
a downtempo piano ballad sampling Soul Dog’s Can’t Stop Loving You.

Familiar hits Face, The Hills, and Often are welcome in the
jumble, although they add to the notion that Beauty is less a cohesive
album than an incubator for future singles. And maybe there’s nothing really
wrong with that—after all, he’s earned it.

    Download: Losers
(featuring Labrinth), The Hills, Dark Times (featuring Ed
    Sheeran)
