I always hear rumors that Mariah Carey’s voice is shot or has weakened over the years, and truth is comparing her early vocals to recent vocals it is kind of undeniable that her voice is at the very least not as strong as it once was.

So my question is, what other artists, do you think have this same problem? Whose voice isn’t as strong as it used to be or is totally shot?

    Interesting topic!

I wouldn’t say his voice is “totally shot,” but Elton John’s voice has absolutely changed over his four-plus decade career. Between drug use, medical issues, and punishing tour schedules, life has taken a toll on Elton’s voice and its fully evident on his last two or three studio recordings. I still think he sounds pretty remarkable in concert, but his lower register and restricted range has hindered his songwriting.

Perhaps this is a good opportunity to plug his new album coming out February 5? Wink

Before country singer Billy Joe Royal went forward last fall, his voice was most definitely different compared to how it was when his material was getting played on the radio, but I wouldn’t say that his voice was shot because it was still very much worth listening to. (smiles)

God bless you and his family always!!!

By the end of her life it was clear that Whitney Houston’s voice had seen its better day.

It is amazing to me that people like Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand and Pavaratti can continue working w/out their voices having any noticeable difference, while others like Mariah, Whitney suffer for years as their voice grows weaker and weaker.

Honey, Britney Spears NEVER had a voice.  She has always sounded like a dying cat.

we wouldn’t know anything about Celine’s voice since she lip synchs 90 percent of her performances. That woman is the queen of lipping.

In all seriousness, Alicia Keys’ voice has been notably shot for quite sometime.

Streisand and Pavarotti though had clearly lost a lot of their top notes and were obviously very carefully arranging their songs. Look at when Babs sang “Evergreen” on the Grammys a few years ago and you’ll hear it almost immediately. All vocalists with that level of range though have very delicate instruments that need very careful maintenance as they get older from the natural vagaries of age/overuse. Mariah’s whistle range from her youth was never gonna last into her 40’s. Meanwhile Whitney’s drug and alcohol use was always going to trash her voice. Babs probably has held out better due to lack of overuse over time (She’s only done a few tours and spent decades not singing live.) so that probably explains it.

Adele. That girl always turns away from hitting the high notes in her original studio recordings. Someone Like You is a prime example. All that smoking has really messed her up.

Exactly which is why I carefully used the word vocalist and not “pop singer” as the title of this thread!

Christina Aguilera, pretty much thanks to all the yelling and straining.

Britney Spears clearly isn’t a vocalist. It was a joke. Duh.

Brandy – she just lost it.
    Mariah Carey
    – girlfriend’s voice is fried.  She can’t hit those whistle notes anymore.  Barf!
Chaka Khan – homegirl screams way too much.
