What can an up and coming artist do to be original and innovative and set themselves apart of other mainstream pop stars in this day and age of music?January 20, 2015 at 10:30 am #408272
No one is really original in this time. The only real way to get everyone’s attention is to be good looking and take your clothes off, which is sad.January 20, 2015 at 11:19 am #408273
I think there are plenty of people in the indie world that are innovating in music. However, their small labels are keeping them from reaching popularity compared to pop performers. Record labels are not going to invest in any new sound unless it has a history of success, so there is no incentive for pop artists to innovate.January 20, 2015 at 1:14 pm #408274
Some artists have succeeded in getting fame without any gimmicks. Look at Adele and Sia.January 20, 2015 at 4:10 pm #408275
Lorde too. When she came on the scene, it was like a breath of fresh air. Love her music and her lyrics are wonderful as well.
I think it’s harder these days to be original because it feels like everything has been done. Like Meghan Trainor has success, but there isn’t anything unique about her.
I don’t know what else someone can do at this point. I guess we’ll know when we see it lolJanuary 20, 2015 at 7:31 pm #408277

Adele following Amy Winehouse’s death.
Sia with her anti-fame manifiesto. [/quote]
Adele and 21 were smashing before Amy died. If anything, Adele’s gimmick is her weight or stripped down music in this electronic music world.
And no one needs to be original, as long as they cite their influences.January 20, 2015 at 8:30 pm #408278
Sia is kinda using a gimmick with her performances & with her latest Music Video. Adele is in a class all her own with her voice. Adele is unattainable. I’d say be like Adele, Lorde and Taylor Swift write your own songs with as few co-writers as possible and try to convey a story. Try not to be another mass produced pop star who sings what their told like Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, One Direction and Maroon 5. Or you know you could just be Beyoncé that would help to.January 21, 2015 at 1:23 pm #408279
It did cross my mind that Sia could have wanted the video to cause a controversty for attention, but I dont think she would do that. Besides the way Beyonce released her album, I dont really think of her as original, she is just over-rated. Almost all pop stars are manufactured, and I think Taylor is starting to become that.
