What could be this year’s out of left field nomination for Album of the Year?
We saw this happen last year with Sarah Bareilles, and in years past. The Black Eyed Peas and Katy Perry.

    Sia, Chandelier
    St. Vincent, St. Vincent
    Ultraviolence, Lana Del Rey
    The Outsiders, Eric Church

I’d argue, however, that the Black Eyed Peas and Katy Perry weren’t “left field” nominations. They were pretty commercially successful albums with multiple popular singles.

    V, Maroon 5
    Mandatory Fun, “Weird Al” Yankovic
    Ultraviolence, Lana Del Rey
    G I R L, Pharrell Williams

yeah but teenage dream achieved greater success after the Grammys. I believe the only hits it had at the time of its nomination were California Gurls and Tenage Dream. Firework, Last Friday Night and ET were successes after.

I do see Ultraviolence coming out of left field.

My thoughts exactly. I’m really rooting for Lana and St Vincent to surprise in the General Field.

I think it could be LIFT YOUR SPIRIT by Aloe Blacc…

If Sia got nominated it would not be surprising, since she’s got the buzz…

1000 forms of fear wouldn’t be left field. It got good reviews and Chandelier is a fairly big hit.

The Black Eyed Peas didn’t pull a “Sara Bareilles.”  Several pundits predicted The E.N.D. to score an AOTY nom due to it’s huge commercial succes.

Albums by Sia, The Black Keys, Lana Del Ray and Maroon 5 would not be considered left-field choices in AOTY.

Sia, 1,000 forms of fear. She can even win.

NO ONE was predicting Sara Bareilles last year, so to say Sia, Pharrell, Eric Church, Lana Del Rey, Maroon 5 and The Black Keys are going to be the equivalent this year is odd.

Hmmm. This year’s “The Blessed Unrest”? I’d pick a middling pop album that no one was expecting to make the AOTY cut. The first one to come to mind is Maroon 5’s “V.” It scored even lower on Metacritic than that album, but it’s about time for Maroon 5 to start entering into AOTY territory, and I doubt that it will be for a career peak effort.

Well, the only reason we’re picking certain acts as potential contenders is because of the Sara Bareilles thing. In most years, Sia, Lana Del Rey and some of the others wouldn’t be considered contenders.

With that said, I guess someone like Jhene Aiko. I’m not too sure that there will be a “Sara” based on Goldderby’s definition of it.

What about FKA twigs? She has the most acclaimed release by a new artist contender.
