John Mayer would have lost as an absolute. He couldn’t beat Norah Jones, Christina
    Aguilera and Adele.

He left behind the “lucky” wins at the Grammys. His music is not enough even to get nominations and I am happy for this. I’ve never liked his music.

This new system damage male singers. At least, Bruno won in 2011. I still don’t understand how he lost to Lorde with “When I Was Your Man.” Unbelievable.

“Daughters” won Song of the year. He would have easily won over that random Norah Jones’ song (Sunrise).

^This is another question how he could get over Alicia Keys’ If I Ain’t Got You.

I still think Norah’s vocal is better than Mayer’s.

Easy, “Royals” was a better song than “When I Was Your Man.” A male will win this year (Sam Smith), so no worries.

    Anyway:
    2000: I Will Remember You
    2001: I Try
    2002: I’m Like a Bird
    2003: Don’t Know Why
2004: Either or for Justin and X
    2005: Daughters
    2006: Since U Been Gone
    2007: Ain’t No Other Man
    2008: Rehab
    2009: Chasing Pavements
    2010: Halo
2011: Just The Way You Are

But this is all hypothethical. Who’s to say that any of the male or female winners would have gotten in and won in their years? We probably could have had different winners.

Women would have dominated since females tend to dominate pop, but I love the combined Pop Solo category. No fillers (this was basically male pop vocal performance since the ’90s), and all of the years have been strong as far as I’m concerned. I’m hoping they’re keeping it for the long-run.

Royal might be a better song but Bruno Mars killed it with his vocal performance. Lorde’s vocal wasn’t the best at all.

Luckily, the vocals aren’t the only thing that voters look for in these categories.

Royals was an all around better song. I hope Sia wins Pop Solo this year she really is the best in that category.

I’d say women every year save for John Mayer twice for “Daughters & “Waiting on a World to Change”. Far superior songs than the female winners.

I disagree Mayer would have come off empty handed. I actually think he’d have easily won with “Daughters” and “Waiting For The World To Change” and I don’t even like the guy’s music, but the Grammys clearly really loved him back then, and those songs were very popular.

Hmmm. A combined Pop Solo Performance category over the years would have skewed heavily female like it’s currently doing. I’m always for separating the categories by gender again. I count by the year of eligibility and not ceremony, so I’ll skip the first one.

2000: Macy Gray, “I Try” (too risky to go against the winner, so I didn’t; “. . . Baby One More Time” was what I expected to win back then)

    2001: Nelly
Furtado,  “I’m Like a Bird” (sort of surprised “You Rock My World” couldn’t win over “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight”)

2002: Norah Jones, “Don’t Know Why” (easy choice for the ROTY winner; not yet, John)

    2003: Justin
Timberlake, “Cry Me a River” (this song is too big to ignore; it was probably close to getting into ROTY)

    2004: John
Mayer, “Daughters” (SOTY winner could have won here I think over a fairly minor Norah Jones track)

    2005: Kelly
Clarkson, “Since U Been Gone” (if Kelly can take down Gwen Stefani and a Beatle, then she could do the same thing to Stevie Wonder)

    2006: Christina
    Aguilera, “Ain’t No Other
Man” (very tempted to pick John Mayer again, but this was a big song for Christina, and I guess she would have to win sometime)

2007: Amy Winehouse, “Rehab(no question in my mind the winning choice)

2008: Adele, “Chasing Pavements” (still surprised “Say” won over “I’m Yours”; they’d make amends to Jason Mraz a year later)

2009: Beyoncé, “Halo” (not a difficult race for Queen B to win at all)

2010: Lady Gaga, “Bad Romance” (GaGa at her peak powers would have eclipsed Bruno’s solo debut single)

    9/2 Female to Male split.
