I’ve seen people talk about the importance of the Best Engineered Album nomination, but I was even more struck by the Producer of the Year nominations: Blake Mills got a nod, and “Sound and Color” is the ONLY thing he produced. Methinks they liked it. A LOT.

Yes. Those tech nominations indicate a lot. But I also think Kendrick Lamar is in the race. The press behind him leading the nominations + all of the #1 rankings on critics lists may indicate that he’s in the race.

Thank goodness it’s not a runaway Taylor Swift win.

Alabama Shakes would be the safe, boring, predictable choice for the AOTY win.  It’s definitely between them and Kendrick Lamar.

They are the only deserving nominee so I hope so. I think they are the closest thing to something like a Beck vs Beyonce showdown with Beyonce being 1984 (in terms of popularity not quality)

I’m more surprised that Max Martin is nowhere to be found in POTY. Crazy.

I wouldn’t be surprised by this. Kendrick obviously deserves to win but Alabama Shakes feels more like a safe GRAMMY choice.

Yeah, it’s interesting given the year he had. But he won it last year, so many voters were over him. But Danger Mouse won in 2011 and was nominated in 2012, so voter fatigue doesn’t always happen in this category.

I’m personally hoping for a win for Diplo – dude KILLED it in 2015.

Anyway, I think the Shakes have it in the bag, though the press Kendrick receives could give him a slight edge. But the technical nominations Sound & Color received, really make it in the frontrunner.

Also, it’s not a safe choice. It’s actually a very very exciting, fun album to listen to (and so is Kendrick’s)

I’ve been wondering about them for a while and all of the nominations yesterday makes me more confident in their win. They are also the only band in the group and are coming off of a BNA nod a couple of years ago. To top it all of Sound and Color is an amazing album and Brittany Howard is the real deal as an artist. I saw them live last night (for the second time) and they are an amazing group to see. I’m going to be shocked if people underestimate them.

I am very confident Alabama Shakes will win this. They’re the perfect cross section in that they’re a classic feeling rock band with an alternative twist, so they’re traditional but still cool enough. The Kendrick Lamar album probably won’t appeal to all the older white men in the academy, even with all the critical acclaim. Same goes for The Weeknd, though his album will be more accessible. Chris Stapleton is even more traditional than Alabama Shakes and has the country vote, but I don’t think the general field will give him the win. And I doubt voters will want to award Taylor Swift again so soon after Fearless. So in sum, Alabama Shakes is in that perfect sweet spot.

Usually I would resent this type of winner but Sound and Color is so good and I’m so proud of their success.

No one has mentioned that Bob Ludwig is also a credited winner for AOTY from 2013-2015. He’s up for Sound & Color this year. If it wins, it will be his fourth consecutive win!

Curious as to why Alabama Shakes is regarded as the safe, boring choice. For some reason I can imagine people touting them as the cool winner if James Taylor was thrown in the mix of nominees.

All very true. Max Martin is hurting for absolutely nothing in terms of recognition. But the guy responsible for two of the biggest Grammy hits of the past year (ROTY nominees “Blank Space” & “Can’t Feel My Face”) merits some mention in my book.

Yeah, I’m really not digging the whole argument of Alabama Shakes being the “boring choice” – have you LISTENED to their album? That couldn’t be farther from the truth. It’s an ALTERANTIVE album, by a modern rock band, it didn’t adhere to any real boundaries, it’s fun and engrossing.

If Alabama Shakes really pulls this off it may be my favorite Grammy win in my lifetime. Plus, Kendrick Lamar will likely win the most awards, so I can deal with him losing this one if it’s to Brittany Howard and company.
