I know there are still months left until the eligibility period ends, but let’s guess which artist will be the “non-mainstream” (surprising and sometimes deserving) Album of The Year nominee at the 60th Grammy Awards, considering there have been one in the last five year.

2013: El Camino – The Black Keys
2014: The Blessed Unrest – Sara Bareilles?/Good Kid, M.A.A.D City – Kendrick Lamar
    2015: Morning Phase – Beck
    2016: Sound & Color – Alabama Shakes
    2017: A Sailor’s Guide to Earth – Sturgill Simpson

Normally, these albums have received critical acclaim and debuted in the Top 5 or 10 on Billboard 200.

    For this edition, we have:

We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service – A Tribe Called Quest
    Metacritic: 91/100
    Billboard 200: #1

From A Room: Volume 1 – Chris Stapleton
    Metacritic: 81/100
    Billboard 200: #2

I See You – The xx
    Metacritic: 85/100
    Billboard 200: #2

    Day Breaks – Norah Jones
    Metacritic: 77/100
    Billboard 200: #2

Blue & Lonesome – The Rolling Stones
    Metacritic: 82/100
    Billboard 200: #4

Awaken, My Love! – Childish Gambino
    Metacritic: 77/100
    Billboard 200: #5

The Weight Of These Wings – Miranda Lambert
    Metacritic: 81/100
    Billboard 200: #3

God’s Problem Child – Willie Nelson
    Metacritic: 83/100
    Billboard 200: #10

You Want It Darker – Leonard Cohen
    Metacritic: 92/100
    Billboard 200: #7

    Melodrama – Lorde
    Metacritic: 91/100
    Billboard 200: #q

Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 – Calvin Harris
    Metacritic: 71/100
    Billboard 200: #2

Other albums (peak Billboard 200’s Top 10)
La La Land Soundtrack – Various Artists
    Revolution Radio – Green Day
    Here – Alicia Keys
    Hardwired…To Self-Destruct – Metallica
    The Stage – Avenged Sevenfold
Pure Comedy – Father John Misty
    Spirit – Depeche Mode
    Vaquero – Aaron Watson
    Windy City – Alison Krauss

    Father John Misty.

Sorry, but I’m laughing at the idea of some of these people not being mainstream.

I wouldn’t say she isn’t mainstream, but if I had to choose someone from that list who I would like to see getting a spot inside AotY , it would definitely be Miranda Lambert. It probably won’t happen though, unfortunately…

I also say Pure Comedy by Father John Misty.

Kendrick Lamar, The Black Keys and Alabama Shakes weren’t really unexpected, though.

Alabama Shakes, Kendrick Lamar, Black Keys were predicted by most everyone, and even Sturgill Simpson and Beck were far from surprises (predicted by many). That said, as of now, I will go with A Tribe Called Quest or Father John Misty.

CTRL by SZA is getting wild reviews and it just took the #1 spot on iTunes US Albums from Katy Perry’s new album. The possibilities are slim, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Grammy’s decide to gush over her. At the end of the day, she’s like if Rihanna, Beyoncé and Solange had a kid.

Metallica seems poised as the Rock slot.

With the exception of Sara Bareilles, all of those examples were predicted/expected to receive an AOTY nomination.

    I’m going with TWO here.

    Kendrick Lamar
    Ed Sheeran
    Bruno Mars
    Father John Misty
    A Tribe Called Quest

I have a feeling this will be an all-male line up.

That could happen — but it’s unlikely in 2017. Which is why I think Bruno Mars’ spot is just waiting for Lorde not to be a complete disaster.

How is it unlikely in 2017, and why? Just in 2013, the lineup was allmale. What’s so different from 2013 and 2017?

Lorde is a fad. “Green Light” did very little on the charts, and she doesn’t have a “Royals” this time around. And when she did, she didn’t get nominated. C’mon, if the Grammys wanted to stop an all-male lineup, it wouldn’t be Lorde. It would be Gaga, and I just don’t think Joanne was a big enough comeback to warrant an AOTY nomination.

I honestly think the outrage would be bigger now. Trump!

I think Miranda Lambert is now due for an AOTY nod.

    Well, in that case. lol

Still, it’s pretty weird that we can’t even compile a list of female contenders. Looks like 2013 all over again.

If CTRL maintains buzz till year end then SZA maybe. Also if she debuted at Number one but sadly she won’t.

For the female contenders it’s between Lorde, Gaga and Miranda Lambert.

    My money’s on Lorde
