I feel like this is perhaps the most difficult General Field category to predict at times because NARAS always seem to throw in a few nominees out of left field and/or ignore acts that they nominate heavily in other fields (Lorde, for example).
So who will Best New Artist this year? Is Sam Smith a lock? Could Iggy Azalea swoop in for the win? Will Ariana Grande got a nomination? Or will an virtual unknown artists (Esmerelda Spaulding for example) sneak in and take it?September 4, 2014 at 6:39 am #400987
The nomniees in my opinion should be:
But Sam Smith for the win 🙂

Sam Smith, unfortunately. Would love if they went left-field and gave it to (or at least nominate) FKA twigs, though.September 4, 2014 at 7:48 am #400989
Sam Smith (frontrunner)
I too would love a left-field nominee, like FKA twigs or BANKS.September 4, 2014 at 8:10 am #400990
Sam Smith is WAY ahead of the competition.
Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea will be seen as too lightweight-pop to win. While Macklemore won last year, Schoolboy Q is no Macklemore, so another hip-hop artist will probably not win. MAGIC!, Meghan Trainor, Bastille, or any other pop act would be seen as a one-hit wonder still and probably not have enough backing. Country artists only win if they’re big (Zac Brown, Carrie Underwood), and Cole Swindell is the country frontrunner, and he’s far from well-known to mainstream music.
Smith’s main competition would be a left-field artist that is lucky to get a nomination (a la Esperanza Spalding) and has enough anti-mainstream pop backing for the win. HAIM, FKA Twigs, BANKS would all fit this bill, but I don’t think any of them are even slam dunks to be nominated, so Smith is out front for now, and will remain so until we see the nominations.September 4, 2014 at 8:15 am #400991
Sam Smith even though he’s been completely edged out by Ariana Grande. I like her voice better, she has hit after hit and her Album got better reviews. But he’ll win.September 4, 2014 at 10:46 am #400992
Sam Smith will win ! No competition at all.September 4, 2014 at 10:56 am #400993
SAM SMITH!September 4, 2014 at 11:51 am #400994
Ever since the first time I heard “Stay With Me” by Sam Smith, months and months ago, I said he was a lock to win this category, and I’m still sticking with that. He’s got everything going for him, plus he actually deserves it. This is a race between him, Iggy Azalea, and Ariana Grande… They hardly ever award rap here, and they’re not going to do it two years in a row, and Grande is way too much still in that Disney channel mold to be taken seriously for a general field award. A win could happen with any one of the 3, but Smith is faaaar ahead.September 4, 2014 at 12:56 pm #400995
Grande doesn’t qualify. She had an album last year.
Who ever the hot new country star is this yearSeptember 4, 2014 at 1:07 pm #400996
^ ^ ^ That’s not how it works. Ariana Grande’s team would be foolish not to submit her to Best New Artist this cycle.September 4, 2014 at 1:36 pm #400997
I thought that you have to have had a first solo album with in the eligiablitly period to qualify?September 4, 2014 at 1:47 pm #400998
No its three how else do you account for Ed Sheeran.September 4, 2014 at 2:51 pm #400999

Artists are often nominated after the year in which their first album is eligible.
However, even if that were the case, two other artists you predicted, HAIM and Iggy Azalea, would not have been eligible under this thought process.
