I got to thinking about this tonight. Not necessarily who the objectively best artists are each decade, but whose music was most personally important to you each decade? For me:

1990s: The decade I came of age was formative in terms of developing my musical taste, so I was all over the place. I was mostly a chart-topping hits person, from Alanis to Celine to Madonna. I’d say close runners-up for me were the Corrs and Sarah McLachlan, but probably the most important of the decade for me was Mariah Carey. “Daydream” was the first album I ever owned. And heck, for a while I had my own music awards that I named after her.

2000s: As I transitioned from high school to college, I didn’t find many albums that meant as much to me as the ones from my high school years. But then in 2006 came the first album in many years that I listened to so often I memorized damn near the whole thing just from repetition: “Children Running Through” by Patty Griffin. That combined with her songwriting work for other artists makes her probably my most important of the 2000s.

2010s: Too soon to tell, but the artist I find myself listening to over and over again, just for the comfort of them, are the Canadian folk trio the Wailin’ Jennys. Even at times I feel like I should explore other music, i often find myself back on one of their albums.

Once a fan, always a fan. It doesn’t matter which decade they released. However, if we are talking about novelty acts then it’s a whole other discussion.

P.S. My most favorite singer who is no longer here is Billy Joe Royal. Ever since his passing earlier this month, I haven’t stopped playing him. I just wish that I had listened to him more before then. I’ve known a fair deal of his material ever since I was a kid, but I never listened to him this much before now and I couldn’t be anymore ashamed to admit it, in my opinion what I’ve been hearing from him is that good not to mention the precious was a flat out babe! (smiling through my tears for him)

Go here to check out my most favorite singer James Otto!

It is too difficult for me to pick just 1 so I’ll give my top four or five artists for each of the decades that I’ve been listening to music.

    1980’s:
Whitney Houston, Wham/George Michael, Cyndi Lauper, and New Kids On The Block

    1990’s:
Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Sheryl Crow, TLC and Toni Braxton

    2000’s:
Christina Aguilera, P!nk, Green Day, Mariah Carey and Dashboard Confessionals

    2010’s:
Ugh what I consider to be a terrible decade for music… but my faves this decade have been:   Maroon 5, Adam Lambert, Glee Cast, P!nk and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.
