All of the other “big” genres have a category dedicated to the best written song (Rap, Country, R&B, Rock, etc.), so why is there no category for Best Pop Song?

    I’ve always wondered about that.

There’s even a “Best American Roots Song” category now. SMH.

No fault of your own…but we seem to have this discussion every year. The general consensus(although, I’m not sure this is entirely accurate) is because the Song of the Year catergory could be considered the Best Pop Song catergory.

I do agree though…Pop should have it’s own category for songwriting. If we can identify pop vocal performances and pop albums why is it such a stretch to have a Pop Song award?

Well… Actually they’re right with the SoTY vs Pop Song argument. The vast majority of the songs that get nominated for SoTY are pop (or crossover) songs. So there’s a risk that you could have the exact same nominees twice. Just look at these years. With the exception of “Same Love” (which can be also considered as pop) all are pop and all would have probably make it to the Pop Song line-up if such category existed. For pop (vocal) performances is different because we have two categories (solo and duo/group).

Unless NARAS expands its SoTY nods from 5 to 10 (assuming that’ll bring more diversity) there should not be a Pop Song category

By the way, there was a songwriter’s award category in the pop field called Best Contemporary Song from 1960 to 1971. However it included all contemporary forms of music of that time (pop, rock & roll, crossover hits and even rhythm & blues; the R&B song category was then created in 1969).

I guess we should know go through their nominees to see how it matched with those from SoTY. The winners are very different, though. But most of the SoTY-winners from that period were standards, jazz or country songs (not actual “pop”)

A pop song category is needed. It’s not fair that country, R&B, rock artists can get 2 songwriters awards while pop songs have to compete only in Song of the year.

Dixie chicks got country song and song of the year for Not ready to make nice.
Beyonce gets R&B song and song of the year for singles ladies.
But Rolling on the deep only gets song of the year. Not fair.

Every genre is eligible for Song of the Year. Best Pop Song should be added.

Right. It’s like saying Best Pop Album should be eliminated because there is Album of the year.

It is different because albums may only fit into one field whereas songs can be entered in different fields. Crossover hits always get in Pop.

Let’s just take a look at recent SoTY nods

2007, 2010 and 2011 were exceptions that included mostly crossover hits.
2008 –> 3/5… and under the new rules “Umbrella” would have probably been relegated to Pop Duo/Group
2009 –> 5/5 including “American Boy” which was actually released to AC radio.
2012 –> 4/5 counting “Holocene” which was not submitted to any field. It probably would have fit better in pop.
2013 –> 4/5 the only exception being “Adorn”.
2014 –> 5/5 if we also include “Same Love”.

The point here is that if a “Best Pop Song” category existed we will probably have the exact same nods from SoTY.

Not Ready to Make Nice was not nominated for Best Country Song.

The BRP could just as easily prevent this potential overlap if they chose to.

Not sure how, since the SOY committee surely would not be allowed to know the results of the Pop field (nor should they).

Anyway, because of the recent emphasis on consolidating the awards, if they added in Pop Song it would probably come at the expense of another category in that field — e.g., instead of Pop Solo and Pop Duo/Group there would be just one award for Best Pop Performance. I don’t think that would be worth it.

The good news is that the awards committee seems open to adding and amending the categories, but I think right now there are bigger fish to fry (like expanding the Alternative field, for example).
