If the cast album of ‘Hamilton’ hadn’t been released in the eligibility cycle last year, and was instead released in the 15/16 cycle, but with the exact same buzz/reputation/success that it currently has, do you think it would be nominated for Album Of The Year? And could it even win it?
I can’t remember if it was even entered for Album of the Year, but I think if it had competed this year instead of last it could have made it in. Hard to say, though, because while the show peaked too late to take full advantage of the last Grammys, it might have peaked too soon to have blown up at next year’s Grammys. But even if not Album of the Year, but they probably could have tried and succeeded in rap and R&B categories if they were eligible this year.
If “Hamilton” had more time last year I think it could’ve taken The Weeknd’s slot.
As for this year, if “The Book of Mormon” couldn’t get in an extremely weak 2012 (minus 21) I doubt “Hamilton” could get over over living legends.
