    When I feel crappy, I don’t tend to listen to upbeat music to cheer me up. It usually helps for me to steer into the skid and exorcise my demons by listening to bummer songs. I assume that’s true for many people, or else there wouldn’t be a sad-songs industry at all; Adele wouldn’t have a career.

    Some go-tos for me: “Moon Song” by Patty Griffin, or pretty much any sad or moody song Patty Griffin has ever recorded (also: “When it Don’t Come Easy,” “Rain,” “Crying Over,” and so on, and so on).

    Also, “Everybody Hurts” by REM (and there’s also a good unplugged cover by the Corrs).

    For some reason, there’s a live version of the sea shanty “Bold Riley” by the Wailin’ Jennys that gives me all the feels exactly when I need them. In a similar vein, “Wild Goose” by Kate Rusby.

    Then there’s the Sarah McLachlan catalog. If she sings it, it does the trick.

    A few more: “Sand and Water” by Beth Neilsen Chapman, “Breathe Me” by Sia, and “Half a World Away” by REM.

    What are some of everyone else’s favorites?

    Years ago my music basis consisted in brit acts specialists in that mood. Keane, Snow Patrol, Coldplay. Pretty much their entire repertoire.

    Some recent songs I love to have a wallow to: Ben Howard – Conrad; Birdy – Wings; PVRIS – St Patrick;
    Jessie Ware – You & I; Rhodes – Close Your Eyes.

    Then to bring myself into a good mood, and full on sing-a-long to Paramore – Still Into You!

    Songs that make me sad are songs that remind me of people who aren’t here anymore. I always cry to Long Live by Taylor Swift and I Wish You Where Here by Avril Lavigne. I also like Tears in Heaven.

    “Unwell” — Matchbox Twenty

    I’m right with you on these especially. The “Buffy” season two finale guaranteed “Full of Grace” would get me every time. “Chasing Cars” I sing along to a lot. And “Unwell” is one of those songs I can especially relate to as an often self-conscious, anxious person: “I’m not crazy, I’m just a little unwell / I know right now you can’t tell / But stay awhile and maybe then you’ll see / A different side of me.” Bingo.

    Another song that taps into that very specific side of me: “Me” by Paula Cole (“And it’s me who’s too weak, and it’s me who’s too shy to ask for the thing I love”).
