Poitier made history with this win, but does the performance stand out as a deserving one?
For me, Albert Finley in Tom jones gave the best performance in the best film of the year in favor of Poitier, who was adequate…Paul Newman easily second best behind Finley.
1. Richard Harris, THIS SPORTING LIFE
2. Paul Newman, HUD
3. Albert Finney, TOM JONES
4. Rex Harrison, CLEOPATRA
5. Sidney Poitier, LILIES OF THE FIELD
They were all good. Poitier should have won for THE DEFIANT ONES, and been at least nominated for A RAISIN IN THE SUN. LILIES OF THE FIELD was boring, IMO. Poitier wasn’t bad, but didn’t do anything special. Harris was terrific – the best of the angry young man films.
