Much like the same year’s Best Actress race, this is a prime example of an “in any other year” scenario.
Both Newman or Hoffman would have won…in any other year.
I have problems with the Gandhi film, but Kinglsey is not one of them. I thought he was flawless, though this win is heavily debated. Thoughts?
I need to see Gandhi again (although doing so would be somewhat of a chore considering the film, while good, isn’t exactly easy to sit through), but I do remember thinking that Ben Kingsley was stellar.
Paul Newman gave one of his best performances.
Jack Lemmon would probably rank last in the category, but he was still quite good.
Peter O’Toole was wonderful.
This is my favorite Dustin Hoffman performance and the film is one of my all time favorites. It is really hard to choose between Hoffman and Kingsley, but for now I give it to Kingsley in what is probably one of the closest calls for me in Oscar history.
By far Hoffman’s best performance, but Kingsley wins this in a large landslide.
Incredible lineup!!! Hoffman has my vote… Love O’Toole too much in this film not to rank him 2nd. Kingsley & Newman flip flop for 3rd & 4th…Lemmon very good but has to be last overall.
