A very good lineup and very debated race.
Every performance has its adament supporters.August 12, 2013 at 5:21 pm #545457
Spacey gets my vote, having not seen Denzel or Penn. Good group of guys.
Anyone think Jim Carrey should have earned a nomination?August 12, 2013 at 7:10 pm #545458
Loved Crowe’s work from The Insider. He gets my vote.August 13, 2013 at 8:54 am #545459
Great best actor lineup…
Voted for the beautifully understated Farnsworth…but could have also easily voted for Penn or Crowe. Washington was very good. Not a big fan of Spacey’s theatrics, but he was decent.
5. SpaceyAugust 13, 2013 at 1:49 pm #545460
Spacey made a worthy nominee but I fail to see what is so earth shattering about his performance. This should’ve been Crowe’s Oscar win.August 13, 2013 at 6:46 pm #545461
Denzel Washington.August 16, 2013 at 7:11 pm #545462
Good line-up, but Kevin Spacey all the way.August 16, 2013 at 7:11 pm #545463

Kevin. He’s hilarious. And yes, I think Carrey deserved a nomination. He’s so memorable in Man on the Moon. I’d probably dump Penn to make room for Jim.September 8, 2013 at 5:51 am #545465

Spacey followed by Washington, Crowe, Penn and Farnsworth in that order.June 24, 2015 at 6:06 am #545468
This race is very bland to me. None of the performances really stand out to me.
I love Spacey but I never felt completely wowed by his performance. I supported his win primarily because it wasn’t the best category and because I liked him and his film.
I remember thinking Penn was fine but found that whole film to be one of Allen’s weaker efforts of recent years. I had a bit of a Woody Allen movie marathon a few years ago where I revisted and searched out many of his films but this one I haven’t seen in probably almost 15 years. It could use a revisit.
Same goes for Washington. I really didn’t like the film that much but I remember thinking he was good. I do recall the race was considered extremely close between him and Spacey and I kind of thought that his loss for Malcolm X would push him over the edge….but I also thought the extreme passion for American Beauty would sweep up Spacey as well. To be honest, I don’t even remember who I predicted at the time. Probably Spacey with shaky confidence.
I hate Russell Crowe but his best work came before he won an Oscar. His work in The Insider is among his best and his best work was in L.A. Confidential. I would almost consider voting for him here.
Farnsworth gave a very wonderful subtle performance. I actually cast my vote for him hastily but whatever.
But yes, Jim Carrey should have been here. And also Phillip Seymour Hoffman for Flawless would have been nice as well.June 24, 2015 at 10:10 am #545469
I haven’t see Farnsworth
Personal 5 would have been:
Philip Seymour Hoffman “Flawless”
Jim Carrey “Man on the Moon”
Ralph Fiennes “The End of the Affair”
