Bill Murray.March 17, 2013 at 10:31 am #542950
Johnny Depp definitely has a fan base here….I am not part of it, however. I do think the nomination is fine but I don’t think I would ever support him winning for it.
Jude Law….moving on.
Sean Penn was one of the biggest cases of someone who I was in support of at that time but then as years went by, I began to appreciate the performance a lot less.
Ben Kingsley was overlooked and rarely discussed that year as it was all about Penn vs. Murray with Depp as the dark horse.
For me, I would give it to Murray with Kingsley nipping very closely at his heels.Marcus Snowden (The Artist Formerly Known as msnowden1)ParticipantMarch 17, 2013 at 11:33 am #542951
I think that Sean Penn’s performance was excellent. His performance as a grieving parent was so realistic.March 17, 2013 at 1:29 pm #542952
Kingsley – House of Sand and Fog
2. Sean Penn – 21 Grams (but he’s great in Mystic River, too)
3. Bill Murray – Lost In Translation
4. Paul Giamatti – American Splendor
5. Peter Dinklage – The Station Agent
I’m fine with Depp’s nomination, but Law had no business that year. That year, I would have voted for Kingsley, but in a scenario where Kingsley and Penn alread had Oscars, Murray deserved the gold.March 17, 2013 at 2:23 pm #542953

Penn’s win is an catastrophe. Murray hands down should’ve gotten it.March 18, 2013 at 5:48 am #542955
Depp is just too much fun to pass up…

It admittedly took me some years to appreciate it, but Sean Penn’s performance is definitely the best here.September 14, 2013 at 7:42 pm #542957

I’ve never understood the love for Murray. He’s just being Bill Murray in a middle aged man’s wank fantasy.
Penn easily.September 20, 2013 at 2:29 am #542959
10 years ago i would’ve said Penn. But flash forward and i’ve changed my tune. Law shouldnt even be there ;therefore, Penn is the weakest. This award belonged to Kingsley, imo. That perf blows me away everytime.
1. Ben Kingsley
2. Johnny Depp
3. Bill Murray

One of the weakest best actor lineups of all time.
I dont get the fuss with Murray.. i find him too droll to be considered
a fine actor…He would not have any nominations in my book
Johnny depp- total joke..bad actor..silly performance..i guess at
one point in his career , the academy rewarded him with noms
because hes a huge moneymaker…His 3 Oscar nominations, IMO
are all worse than the other..
Penn– I like him as an actor, but this is not a strong enough performance for the win.
Two or three emotionally riveting scenes…and they are all the same…his mixture
of grief and determination is like chalk on the blackboard for me..
Jude Law— shouldve won supporting for THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY.. one of
my favorite films of 1999..his performance along with everything about Cold Mountain
is boring and monotonous..Anthony Minghella, who i admired, mustve taken a nap on this one.
But now, with all that being said…for me,, BEN KINGLSEY in The House of Sand and Fog
is so brilliant that he shouldve won his 2nd oscar for this film..I love this film and he and Connolly
were both superb, as well as Agdashloo…In this film alone, i can see why SIR BEN demands to
be called sir..lolSeptember 20, 2013 at 6:44 am #542961
Kingsly. At the time I wasn’t a fan of the movie but rewatching it, he deserved that Oscar. Now Jude Law………..what were they thinking?
