Sally Field. A powerful and inspiring performance.

I also really like Judy Davis/My Brilliant Career and Hanna Schygulla/The Marriage of Maria Braun.

Hands down Bette Midler.  Jane Fonda comes in 2nd.  Sally Field’s Norma Rae kinda grates me with that awful accent.  Also she kinda over does the whole thing.

Sally Field without a doubt. Bette’s acting is the definition of chewing up the scenery.

I hate to say this but Streep was the lead in Kramer vs. kramer and
actually had more screen time than a lot of lead performances
and certainly a smuch as Anthony Hopkins, who won for the Silence of
the Lambs…Jane Alexander was rightfully the supporting actress
    of the film…
Having said that, SALLY FIELD  and  BETTE MIDLER  were better
and i think oscar got it right with Sally..

A fair point, but screentime doesn’t necessarily amount to a “lead performance”. I feel as though Streep manages to work here because a lot of the way the audience sees her is through Dustin Hoffman’s perspective. She’s not on for a good amount of the film, but when she does appear, we aren’t necessarily following her journey as much as we are following Hoffman’s journey reacting to her (his position after she divorces him, his reaction to her wanting custody, his consolation when she realizes their son would be better off with him, etc.). I wouldn’t dismiss the argument that she could be considered a lead (the title “Kramre vs. Kramer” does refer to her, after all), but I feel as though the narrative leans so much more in Hoffman’s perspective that she is sidelined more into supporting territory.

Meryl Streep was supporting. Which isn’t a bad thing…….

Schygula is absolutely amazing. And so is the great Judy Davis!

I went with my heart though and voted for Jill Clayburgh, who gives a touching, comedic perf (along with Candice Bergin).

I still contend with Streep being in Supporting, but I actually do understand the argument that she could be considered Leading (the Anthony Hopkins comment is what really got me). I have always felt her work in KRAMER VS. KRAMER was very natural, much more than some of her later work (even in her two greatest performances in Sophie’s Choice and A Cry in the Dark) and I would almost consider voting for her here being in this category.

That being said, among the actual 5 Best Actress nominees from that year, I do think Sally Field deserved it, despite the good work from Bette Midler and also Jane Fonda was a lot better here than she was in her winning performance in Coming Home, for which she robbed Ingrid Bergman or Jill Clayburgh of an Oscar.

I’ll just give it to Sally Field, though I thoroughly do not like that film at all, and it is a close call over Streep, Fonda, Midler, and Judy Davis….though I thought My Brilliant Career would have contended in 1980 because it had a tech nomination that year.
