Still can’t see why Glenn didn’t easily win.March 10, 2013 at 10:32 am #542738
Because she’s not the best.
I’d put Meryl, Cher and Holly above Glenn and possibly Sally Kirkland as well but it’s been such a long time since I’ve seen ‘Anna’ I can’t be certain.March 10, 2013 at 10:41 am #542739
Well, for me Glenn was the best. She acted the hell out in FA.
Though I don’t mind Cher winning at all. Was a nice comedic performance. (she should have won BSA for Silkwood imo)
Ironweed is not one of my favorite Meryl performances (except for the Bar sininging scene of course-that was heartbreaking), but it’s somehow astoinishing she got a nod that year. Her only Oscar nominated performance without a Globe nod!March 10, 2013 at 1:32 pm #542740
Kirkland and Close were great in weak movies, Hunter was outstanding in a excellent movie, I’d vote for her. Cher’s nomination should had been her reward and Streep’s nomination was unecessary.
That was the year that Streisand gave one of the most amazing performances of her career in Nuts and Lilian Gish did her swan song, I can’t believe that Streep was put ahead of Streisand and Gish.March 10, 2013 at 2:10 pm #542741
2. Glenn Close
3. Meryl Streep
4. Holly Hunter
5. Sally KirklandMarch 10, 2013 at 2:56 pm #542742
This is a year for Best Actress that I would rank as competitive as 1950 and 1962.
Close deserved this Oscar hands down. Cher was more deserving for Mask and I felt this win was a small make up for not being nominated for Mask. Sally Kirkland was better than I expected when I first watched this movie. Hunter was good. I have always felt that Meryl Streep should have been nominated in Supporting Actress for her turn in Ironweed.
1. Glenn Close
2. Sally Kirkland
3. Holly Hunter
5. Meryl StreepMarch 10, 2013 at 3:12 pm #542743
Not a bad category. I don’t think Cher winning was that horrible but I do think that Glenn Close was truly unforgettable as Alex Forrest. No matter what else she does, I always think of her in this film.
#5-Meryl Streep (she was definitely quite good but I do agree Supporting would have been more of a proper placement. Her slot could’ve gone to someone else….one obscure choice is Mia Farrow in Woody Allen’s very little seen September)March 10, 2013 at 4:32 pm #542744
Streisand shouldve had a spot for NUTS..
i think Holly Hunter was the best that year…
CHERMarch 10, 2013 at 6:11 pm #542745
^What in God’s name is with you and your obsession with Barbra Streisand?
Holly Hunter should’ve won here. It was great to see a comedy win here for a change, and Cher was charming but what did she do that was Oscar winning?
Streep should’ve been in Supporting.March 10, 2013 at 7:20 pm #542746

Glenn Close.March 11, 2013 at 11:42 am #542748
Not a fan of Close…and this performance is one of my least favorites…
LOVE CHER IN THIS AND GETS MY VOTE!!!
Streep is simply amazing and almost takes Cher’s # 1 spot for me. Never understood the # of people on the forums who rank her so low. IRONWEED ties with A CRY IN THE DARK as m fav Streep work, and both are far ahead of SOPHIE’S CHOICE.
Also agree on those who say Streisand and Gish were unfairly snubbed this year (Hell even Bette Davis was terrific!)

Apparently I voted for Close???
For obvious reasons this seems unlikely.June 27, 2013 at 5:52 am #542750
Because she’s not the best.
I’d put Meryl, Cher and Holly above Glenn and possibly Sally Kirkland as well but it’s been such a long time since I’ve seen ‘Anna’ I can’t be certain.
Cher is hands down the weakest in one of the best Best Actress line ups of all time.
